I know there's a lot of "that's cheeky and taking the piss" bit how many of you actually do it when working from home and is it really that bad if you do do it??

I used to go to a half hour class at lunchtime, but took it as my lunch.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 10/05/2024 22:53

My job isn’t compatible with sneaking off anywhere but no I wouldn’t it’s fraud and cheating either public services or a private company depending on who you work for. If self employed fair enough…

thaegumathteth · 10/05/2024 22:53

Absolutely not. I might put the dishwasher on or make a phone call but I don't go out as if I'm not getting paid!

Happybunnymum · 10/05/2024 22:53

I do, I’m the sense I do school run then work from the gym. In between meetings/when I need a mental break I go do my workout, then go home to work just after lunch.

im much more focussed this way, less distracted by housework and gives me a break from my screen.

my boss knows and is happy with it. As long as my work gets done which it does my company don’t care where I work.

bunnypenny · 10/05/2024 22:55

Yes of course. I blank out a couple of hours every morning and so long as no other meetings come in I’ll go to the gym.

elizzza · 10/05/2024 22:58

Are there many wfh jobs that are set hours? (Genuine question, I don’t know) My job requirement is 37.5 hours a week but outside of arranged meetings and calls no one cares when I do those hours, so I don’t sneak off and I definitely don’t consider going to a spin class at 11am then working until 8pm to be fraud or cheating my employer out of anything!

PilatesHippo · 10/05/2024 22:58

I dream of doing this!! I work from home one day per week and I am forever hoping to sneak off to the gym. In reality, it never happens. I am either super busy with work or stuck in meetings- or both.

i keep living in hope though

5128gap · 10/05/2024 22:59

No. But I sometimes sneakily get out of going to the gym by staying late at work.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 10/05/2024 22:59

While the rest of us have no choice but to go into the hospital, school, shop, transport systems and work our bloody socks off while others are taking the piss and "w"fh

VeraForever · 10/05/2024 23:00

I retired during the pandemic.
I was on reduced hours before and it was so lovely to be in an almost empty supermarket and my husband and I loved visiting local pubs for lunch and enjoyed peaceful walks along the river near our house.
Post pandemic. The pubs are rammed, the supermarkets are rammed and our lovely quiet walk , where our dog was off lead, is full of runners , joggers, cyclists and walkers , all of working age .

Dog is now, mostly on lead, we've stopped going to our local pubs, the local cafe is full of wfh twats eating nothing and irritating the staff, ( I know them)

Our local library is full of them leaving no space for people to do research or sit and read.

LetsGoRoundTheRoundabout · 10/05/2024 23:00

No, work wouldn’t mind if I moved my hours to allow for a trip to the gym, but I don’t have time to fit it in with school runs. I absolutely wouldn’t do it if it meant just writing off that time from work.

FuckTheClubUp · 10/05/2024 23:01

Not me by my cousin is forever in the gym or on a shopping trip during work hours. Saying that though, as long as her work is done, there’s no problem. She doesn’t really have set hours as she could stay up all night to do her work and sleep in the day if she wanted

Same. Mine isn’t WFH but I do have flexibility as long as my work gets done. I do the school run 3 days a week so finish early on those days, then do a long day on Thursday to catch up (usually in work until 10pm). Everyone knows, everyone is happy with it. There would be issues if my work wasn’t getting done, but it would also be immediately noticeable.

HeraSyndulla · 10/05/2024 23:02

A tad difficult in my job, I'm an Intensive Care Nurse.

TempersFuggit · 10/05/2024 23:02

I would go in my lunch hour and then take an early lunch, but I wouldn't just abscond.

WalrusOfLove · 10/05/2024 23:05

No, I'm on building sites all day. I do my 10-12 hours and then go to the gym. If you're on flexitime then why not, but I'm not convinced most people make up the time. My friend is forever popping up online on her PS5 during the day (I get a notification on my phone when a friend comes online) and she's logged off by 5pm and often not doing a whole lot for the hour or two before.

Changingplace · 10/05/2024 23:05

Over lunch sometimes yes, I can do a half hour class and get there & back in an hour, I wouldn’t just bugger off in the middle of the day.

SuziQuinto · 10/05/2024 23:05

I think some jobs are what you might call "light touch". Obviously, in very responsible jobs it couldn't happen.
There was a woman on here who said she took client calls while changing her baby's nappy.

BusyMintCrab · 10/05/2024 23:05

I do a timesheet so no it can’t be part of my working day. But I could take a longer lunch that’s no prob.

Please don’t tar us all with the same brush! I work from home 3/4 days a week and do work my socks off! I sometimes barely pause for breath when at home and am usually much more productive than when I’m in the office. I know lots of people who work from a workplace and barely work and just chat all day - so it’s not the workplace, it’s the person. Please remember that :)

Ponderingwindow · 10/05/2024 23:10

I don’t sneak. I just tell them I am stepping away and go to the gym. I only get paid for hours worked, but they don’t care when I put in those hours.

Offices are workplaces are full of people who aren’t “working their socks off”! 😂 People bugger off for ages to get lunch. I am in a huge building and I have observed very regular smoke breaks, chatting around the kettle, looking at stuff on personal phones. It works both ways.
I hybrid and definitely chat more on office days.

TorturedPoetsDepartmentAnthology · 10/05/2024 23:13

Just to add, I’d rather work than go to the gym. I use my lunch break to make personal calls or eat lunch or do any quick chores I can get done - be it at home or work. I do not feel the need to sneak as long as I’m adhering to my actual lunch break and it’s in my calendar. Once or twice a week, I don’t get time for a lunch break so I eat while working and I’m not complaining. I don’t feel the need to justify what I do in my lunch break. Senior management actually have a policy they say we must have a protected lunch hour with no non urgent meetings and they encourage us to get away from our desks.

Momstermunch · 10/05/2024 23:13

I find sneaking an odd concept to be honest. If you're in the type of WFH job where you are expected to be present, how do you get away with that? I did call centre work from home and there's no way I could have snuck anywhere! I barely managed loo breaks. I'm now doing more of an admin job so the hours are flexible and I can take more than an hour for lunch as long as I do my overall hours.

RampantIvy · 10/05/2024 23:13

No. My colour on Teams changes to yellow (away from my desk) if I am away for any length of time.

It's no wonder so many employers are asking people to return to office based working if employees are taking the piss like this.
