Why is Secondary school uniform so expensive?

I've just gone to order my Y7 DD some P E shorts now the weather is warm and they're £16 each! Primary ones were £5.

It makes it so difficult to afford enough uniform. I feel like I'm constantly washing it!

My DD's school is much better than some in that they don't have blazers or ties. But we have a checked school blouse and a logo jumper that is really expensive. I get her trousers and skirts from Next as seems to be the only place that I can get hold of uniform beyond the summer holidays. Then the P.E hoodie is logoed and the P.E top has the school name on so both expensive.

There must be so many struggling with this. They did have a second hand sale the other day but they didn't have much. I did manage to get a second jumper. The P.E kit has changed recently so they had no P.E kit.

School logo clothing is a fraction of the cost of other brands and that is what teenagers will demand if they can get away with it.
It might be a big outlay but it usually lasts for ever.
Why are parents STILL surprised that they have to buy school uniform and that it WILL cost money!
I remember wearing it in the 60’s.

And kids may still demand the branded clothing for the weekend snd 13 weeks of school holidays so parents are paying out extortionate school uniform fees and for out of school clothing.

If a uniform is required so badly a black tracksuit and a polo shirt is all that is required. Can be bought from anywhere, students will be comfortable and it won't cost the parents £500.

Ours is similar prices although shorts don’t need the logo. The most expensive item is the blazer which is £20. At least at this age they don’t grow out of clothes so quickly!

That's good I had to pay £40 odd when last bought DS one which was about 6 years ago

So my child is starting high school in September:

Note this list does not include fitted shirts, trousers, socks, underwear, coats, school bags, school shoes, trainers, football boots, stationary, lunch box

The below total cost is for 1 mandatory school logo item that cannot be bought elsewhere.

1x jumper £24.99 (I'll probably buy 2-3 of these),
1x tanktop £22.99
1x school tie £8.99
1x Blazer £34.99
1x PE polo shirt £18.50
1x PE shorts £17.99
1x PE socks £11.99
1 x Rugby shirt £25.99
1x PE Hoodie £31.99

Total £198.38

I wouldn't bother with the jumpers. Or only buy one. Not known a single kid prepared to wear them after Xmas of year 7. Considered totally naff

And the rugby shirt was used all of 6 times by DS before it was outgrown. Passed it on to a friend's child

It can seem expensive but I found things lasted really well. Both my kids only had 2 blazers throughout 5 years if secondary which for something they’re wearing so often works out very cheap. The PE kits do seem expensive for only wearing them a couple of hours a week but again I only ended up buying a couple of sets of it over 5 years. Football boots were probably the biggest waste of money for my kids.

Depends on how much they.griw my son left school last summer, I remember being most annoyed having to fork out for a new blazer in his last year as he had grown so much .
