Can I afford to leave my husband?

I’ve recently been made redundant from my quite well paid part time job and rely on my husband financially. Due to my little boy receiving high rate DLA and him needing a lot of care, he is unable to attend childcare full time. I am his main parent carer. My husband has a well paid job, about £50000. I have no debt, I’m a part time doctorate student. I have been unhappy for a long time but feel stuck. I love him but I don’t think in the right way anymore.
mortgage of £700 and the usual regular bills. I’m not sure I’d qualify for benefits. I really do want a job but struggling to fit one in, term time only.

It really does depend on what the cost is to you as a person if you stayed.
There are some relationships where there isn't enough money in the world to make it worth staying

I should also add I have no savings, very little anyway, about £2500

" I love him but I don’t think in the right way anymore."

There has to be something else why you want to leave?!?! As this bit above sums up so many relationships! It's what happens over time, especially if you don't out effort into the relationship due to life being busy.

There is more to it. Over time and due to stresses, we’ve both changed and grown up a lot. We don’t make each other happy or laugh like we once did. Tonight he has shouted at me in public and it’s the first time it’s ever happened - I was scared for my little boy and panicked and he started shouting at me to ‘calm down MAN’ like I’m some madwoman. I’ve been pondering over leaving for a long time.

Why do you think you wouldn't be eligible for benefits? If your DS gets high rate DLA would you not get benefits for being his carer?

PilgorTheGoat · 10/05/2024 18:05

You’d likely be eligible for quite a lot of benefits. Your child gets DLA, you will be eligible for UC which will be boosted by the disabled child element and the carers element.

Your rent will be covered by UC and you’ll likely be exempt from paying council tax.

Yes but not even enough to cover mortgage
