Upset I can't help magpie

Hi all, not sure if anyone is able to offer any advice.
There's an injured magpie who has been in the garden all day. He hops around a bit but clearly can't use it's wing. Then all of a sudden another magpie flew down and started attacking it!
First I thought it was maybe a mercy killing, but the attacker has left now and the injured bird is still here.
I called the rspb but they said to contact my nearest wildlife rescue.
There's no wildlife rescue anywhere near me, ie closest is over an hour. And not sure they would even take it. Also I have to work.
I'm not sure how I can help it, I dropped some food and water nearby, but it's not taking it.
Also, the attacker might return.

I feel awful just letting it deteriorate and die, but I'm not sure if there's anything I can actually do?

Must be upsetting to see but I don't think you can do anything else. Hopefully these words can be a comfort to you.

It's the circle of life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
'Til we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle
The circle of life

Have you tried a local vet? My local vets have taken injured animals before now for us, then sent on to the relevant people. Eg, injured hedgehog, taken in overnight, then sent to hedgehog rescue people the next day.

If you use facebook, maybe you could post there and someone would be willing to take it on the drive if you explain you can't. Lovely birds, I rescued a fledgeling last year that had been grabbed by a vile cat

Contact the nearest wildlife rescue ! they usually have contacts in outer areas and some also ask volunteers to transport injured animals from further away.

Please contact a local vet - they will all help an injured wild animal (I think they are obliged to as vets) even if it's just to put it out of its misery. Please don't leave it to suffer a long, protracted death being attacked or starving/dying of thirst. Ring the vet you choose first to let them know you are bringing the magpie in. You could even post on a local FB group to ask which vet practice is the most sympathetic. Good luck and please to keep us updated.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I've persisted and contacted a rescue in the county and as one previous poster mentioned they are sending round a local volunteer to take it to the vet this afternoon. So all in all a good ending, even if the bird might not make it, at least it won't be left to the elements.
Thank you for your advice and I'm glad there are like minded people out there who care.

Well done @Howtohelpbirds

I took an injured pigeon which was being attacked by another bird to an emergency vet (happened about 6:30pm). They assessed it with a view to rehabilitating it, but it was badly injured and could not stand, so they put it to sleep. They didn't charge either. I asked permission first to take it there by giving them a quick call. I couldn't leave it there as it was really suffering.
