AIBU to sleep on the streets in London?

Hello all,

I currently live in the Midlands at the moment and am looking for employment support but I am struggling to find any employment services that are helping me here.

I am finding it very hard to find a role in society. I graduated from University a couple of years ago and got good A Level grades (A* in Maths, A I’m History and A in Geography) but I am finding the jobsearch process very difficult due to my neurodiversity.

I have just been told by CareTradeUK (an organisation that was supporting me remotely) that their funding arrangement has changed now and they can only support individuals who are based in London.

This makes me sad as I have no one to support me now in finding employment and am finding it so hard.

A lot of the support is concentrated in London and there is not much here in the midlands.

I was thinking - would it be better if I moved to London and slept outside (ie. On the streets) for a bit so that I could access the job search support that is available in London?

I have a Blue Badge which I can bring with me and medical evidence.

I am finding it very hard to access employment support and I feel as if I don’t have a role in society without a job. My autism is making it very hard for me to find employment though.

What is it like living outside, and would I be able to access more support with jobsearch if I moved to London and slept outside for a bit?

Please don’t. It’s extremely rough. I don’t think you’d be unharmed for longer than a few days. Lots and lots of drugs, violence, crime, severe mental health issues. Have you actually seen the way these people have to live?

Nevermind31 · 10/05/2024 21:08

Just no. You will not get a job being homeless.
you will also not get support as you don’t actually live in London. You’ll be one of many homeless people being moved along.

Catandsquirrel · 10/05/2024 21:11

Where in the mids are you OP? If you tell us a bit more about your circs, the area of work you're looking at and where you live, we can maybe help look into some local services who can help. Someone up thread has suggested one for the E mids. Maybe the London service can signpost you to something local? Your uni careers team are a good shout

Please don't make yourself homeless. Your safety is the most important thing and being homeless is so dangerous. Plus you wouldn't even have a London address.

Congratulations on your great A level grades. Finding your first job is often really challenging. but once you get your first job, finding another one is easier. Have you thought about accountancy/apprenticeships? Just saying as you have a good maths grade. What sort of jobs would you like to do? What about going to a recruitment agency?

Bless you @oakleaffy I'm glad things have improved for you now.

I once took a young homeless lass (maybe 17) to MacDonalds at one of the main London stations. Poor kid - I just wanted to scoop her up and give her a hug - chocolate milkshake and a burger meal hardly seemed to cover it - I sometimes wish I'd done more for her. It makes me angry that some people just drop through the net like that.

It’s so difficult- Younger people stand a better chance at rebuilding their lives-
I hope the girl you helped is ok now - I expect she remembers you!
London is a very bad place to be homeless in-
Luck does play a part.

I met a building society manager who allowed a mortgage!
Needless to say, I paid the mortgage before any other bill- Probably not so easy these days.

A home , however humble, is worth having.

@Glucose95 would be nuts to give up a home for the awfulness of the streets.

The squat I had was condemned but had a nice vibe 168 Swaton Road E3
Now a private house-

Have you actually seen how people sleeping rough have to live? I wouldn't wish that on anyone, and I certainly wouldn't voluntary choose it!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 10/05/2024 21:17

I'm really sorry to hear this - I don't think this would work at all as you wouldn't be able to prove you live in London with no address

Canteloupetoday · 10/05/2024 21:28

Homeless women are at high risk of rape, murder or being physically hurt, being captured and kept in modern slavery, being forcibly addicted the drugs, or otherwise mistreated such as urinated on, and all the rest. Sleeping on the street is dangerous because of these risks. Not because it's a bit cold, or uncomfortable. You are at the mercy of psychos, and criminals who want to get their kicks, and their dollar out of you, the lone vulnerable ND street sleeping woman.

Please find a hostel to stay in. It will be safer for you.

Serencwtch · 10/05/2024 21:36

Do not do that. I spent a month street homeless & several months in hostels/night shelters.
You are likely to experience a lot of sexual harassment & sexual assault & assault on a nightly basis. You will repeatedly have your property stolen. The experiences will stay with you for life. Most people use drugs or alcohol just to get through each night.
You certainly won't be able to look for employment.

Beautiful3 · 10/05/2024 22:18

You need an address to apply for jobs. Making yourself homeless is a terrible idea. It's very dangerous to live on the streets.

It's very true about the experiences staying with you for life.
