Hi sorry to put this on AIBU but I was hoping for some help regarding fleas. About 2 months ago my cat got fleas, I presumed its because of the warmer weather she has been going out more. I took her to the PDSA and got her treated and bought treatment for the next month also. In the last week she has been licking the fur away again, she has been given the second dose of treatment. I also treat our dog at the same time, I'm not sure if the dog has them, she is 15 and sleeps a lot and doesn't appear to be scratching herself. I also bought Indorex and sprayed the bits where the cat would lie. I now think they still haven't gone as the poor cat is licking and biting at herself. I have 2 bites on my ankle so I'm convinced they're all over the house. I have been trying since Wednesday to get in touch with the PDSA and no matter what number I press when given options I just get cut off. I have tried to book an appointment online and its saying I'm not registered. I'm sorry for putting this on here but I feel terribly sorry for her and I'm hoping someone may know how to actually speak to a person IRL. If I need to take the post down I will, thanks in advamce.

Thank you @agncndmkd128494 I presume maybe I still had them in my house and I didn't know it. The cat and the dog both get treat at the same time. I feel daft cause I'm thinking if I have treat them both but the house still has them its a vicious circle. I'm struggling trying to get everything washed/cleaned/aired all at the same time x

@Mollylegs
This is copied from British pest control site ‘ Around 95% of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in the environment, not on pets.’

The environment is really important to treat as well. The stuff you put on pets, only really kills the live fleas.
Once the eggs hatch, the cycle starts again. That’s why it’s an ongoing process until you get rid of the little buggars.

Warm bowls of soapy water left around will attract them. They’ll jump in and die.

Also, Diatomaceous earth, you can order big bags from Amazon sprinkled around will kill them as well, it’s not toxic to pets. Its a fine white powder, but don’t use if you have a filter in hoover, cause it will wreck it.

Hi @crumbledog I was thinking of using the flea bombs as I've been told not to treat the pets until the next lot of treatment incase of overdose, so I'm just thinking of the best way to treat the house. I bought 1 can of Indorex but I can't afford anymore. Someone who posted earlier said she has to buy 6!!!. I've looked at the bombs on Amazon but there is a lot of negative reviews x

Warm soapy water bowls around the house and read up about the Diatomaceous earth, its about £10.00 a 10kg bag.
Keep vacuuming and make sure to empty the bag outside, so they don't crawl out.
Flea comb them too.

Thanks for all your advice @crumbledog I hope I get rid of them soon. I had wanted to ask the vet if it was ok to give her an antihistamine to stop the poor soul scratching. I couldn't flea comb her as she would take your face off, she's not a friendly cuddly cat.

Mollylegs · 10/05/2024 16:07

Hi @crumbledog does it actually work? Do you just place it next to where she sleeps?

I had a nightmare with this last year! Only one of us kept getting bitten so I didn't think it was fleas but turned out it was! I went to the vets and got the cat treated with stronghold and indoorexed everything, it worked! I also washed everything I could aside from the clothes in the wardrobe and the king-sized quilt, was such a PITA and perhaps not necessary because this was before the stronghold.

Another bite recently so applied stronghold and nothing since. It's like magic!

It can only be bought from the vet or with a prescription so it's a bit of a faff but worth it for a flea free house.

Maybe get some flea traps to be sure what you are dealing with.

Hello @Pickingmyselfup I think stronghold may have been what the PDSA, All I could remember was it started with an S. Anyway she obvs has fleas again. I have no Indorex left and I'm now wondering if the dog has them too??? Both of them were treated again at the same time on Sunday and I've sprayed Indorex every where I could. Only problem is my sofa cushions can't be removed so I've just had to spray them x
