Mounjaro and abdominal pain

yellowblue20 · 09/05/2024 17:11

I started mounjaro last Friday (6 days ago). No side effects for the first 2 days, had a fever on the 3rd day (put this to over exertion as I did around 4 hours of exercise the day before) and for the last 2 days I’ve had abdominal pain. I’ve also had some nausea and diarrhoea which is to be expected.

I was concerned about the abdominal pain, it feels like my stomach is sore and it’s just under my rib area.

I saw my GP today who had no clue what mounjaro even was and was not happy I had taken it. He booked me in for a blood test tomorrow and told me to stop taking it. he said pancreatitis can present as abdominal pain and it’s on the rare side effect list.

has anyone else experienced similar abdominal pain? Feeling really gutted because I was hoping that I could use this to finally lose some weight (BMI 35).

I know I should listen to my GP and stop taking it but he didn’t even know what it was until he googled it for 2 minutes.

has anyone else had similar pain?

Who prescribed it for you?

BurnoutGP · 09/05/2024 17:30

Commonest side effects of mounjaro (and all GLP drugs) are GI. You need to speak to the specialist clinic that prescribed it not your GP. Not their responsibility. Its not a primary care drug for weight loss on the NHS so why should he know.

yellowblue20 · 09/05/2024 17:32

@GlitterBall91 i got it online from manual

Hi!
I was taking Mounjaro for 4 weeks and the abdominal pain was really bad. When it wasn’t hurting I felt uncomfortable all the time. I would also get really bad heartburn and sulphur burps. I really regret starting it and only continued the following weeks to see if it got better. It’s a shame as I did lose 1 stone but the side effects just wasn’t worth it for me personally

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 09/05/2024 17:41

Never heard of it, why on earth would you carry on taking it knowing it’s making you feel awful and then expect the NHS to bail you.

Even worse you’ve seen the GP and not listened! Incredible.

Surely there are less painful ways to lose some weight OP, I have sympathy but good grief step away from the moujaro! Pancreatitis is awful.

yellowblue20 · 09/05/2024 17:41

@Urinehelp123 oh no sorry to hear that

whereabouts was your abdominal pain and was it bad?

I want to continue but worried about going against the advice of my GP as he’s probably said it for a reason. Just seeing it work on everyone else !

it was pretty horrific some nights - it was middle of my stomach quite high up.

Are you on the starter dose of 2.5mg?

Yummymummy2020 · 09/05/2024 18:01

Op just wondering, have you been following a healthy diet? I am on ozempic but if I eat an unhealthy meal I am as you describe for a few days so I eat healthier to avoid that alone.

yellowblue20 · 09/05/2024 18:11

@RickyGervaislovesdogs I haven’t not listened to my GP! I have paid to try this medication which was prescribed to me so I was wondering if anyone else has had these effects

@Urinehelp123 yes I’m on the 2.5

@Yummymummy2020 to be honest I’ve not been able to eat, probably in about 800 calories a day mostly consisting of fruit, a protein shake and a small meal which is usually healthy

I managed just ONE injection on Mounjaro. It gave me the worst GI symptoms, I had to take 3 days off work then the side effects lasted 3 weeks. A very expensive mistake for me.

Cerialkiller · 09/05/2024 19:09

I had very bad abdominal pain on day two. It was trapped air. Try massaging left to right in the area that hurts. If it makes you burp then it might just be gas.

Your diet really matters on this. Having any large meal, or anything fried/greasy or spicy or in my case lots of gassy veggies (broccoli and cabbage) can cause side effects.

I agree you should check it out to be on the safe side. The first week is the worst though.

upanddownandupanddown · 09/05/2024 19:21

I took Saxenda (similar idea). Fine for the first couple of weeks, then the diarrhoea started, then the vomiting. I was so ill and dehydrated that I was nearly fainting every time I stood up.

Then the abdo pain started. Agonising pain in my upper abdomen. Ended up in A&E with it. Was not pancreatitis thank goodness.

I stopped it at this point. Episodes of the abdo pain continued. Until, 4 months later, I had my gallbladder removed.

They said at the operation that I had a chronic inflammation/infection of the gallbladder, as well as the gall stones. The gallstones would have already been there before I started the injections, but I’m pretty sure the injections flared it up and made it worse.

My BMI is similar to yours. It made me realise that I don’t want to lose weight enough to put myself through ill health to achieve it. An expensive and painful lesson.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 09/05/2024 21:55

I hope you feel better and /or symptoms pass and it works for you.

I just googled it - thyroid cancer as a side effect. Good lord. Stomach problems, pancreatitis, vision problems and gall bladder issues….

I’ve been on mounjaro for 9 weeks and so has my partner, I’ve not experienced this but my partner is suffering with it atm, he’s appetite has taken such a dive since starting the jabs and then 2 days ago he had a couple of slices of takeaway pizza and has had 2 days of bad pain in abdomen, day one was also getting the most horrendous sulphur burps, I’m talking clear the room, the kids are hiding from the smell, I was getting close to banishing him to his man cave 🤣
ive had bad cramps and suffered with bad diarrhoea after macaroni cheese the other week, it seems for both myself and partner that cheese may be a huge issue since starting the jabs, I can only assume it’s because we have had cheese maybe 2 times in the last 9 weeks, it’s almost as if we have got intolerant to it. Maybe you have eaten something that has had this effect, maybe the jabs aren’t for you (that would be unfortunate with how much this stuff costs) manual is a reputable company, have you contacted them to speak with the clinician? I get mine from Numan and they have an option to talk to the clinician if you have an concerns or side effects

Same. I take wegovy and anything high fat like cheese is the worst for heartburn.

yellowblue20 · 09/05/2024 23:03

Thank you all it seems I’m not alone in having these side effects

@Tanyahawkes ive spoken to a clinician at manual who just gave me advice on managing diarrhoea however didn’t say anything specific for the abdominal pain, think they assumed the pain was from the diarrhoea however I know it’s not as the pain is constant, even though it might be in the background when it’s at its lowest, it never goes away even if I’m having normal bowel movements.

I forget if you have already answered this. So I’m sorry if you have

how long have you had the pain? My partners pain started yesterday morning, was bad all day until evening, lessened a little if laying half on his side, half sat up, this morning was still there a bit and on and off today if he’s not moved for a little while and then tries to get up, he’s said he feels bruised on the inside, I remember saying last night I can imagine maybe the cheese has caused a gas build up inside that’s maybe caused his intestine to be englamed and kind of like swollen, causing the bruised feeling

Yes, but that’s why it’s only prescribed for people who are very obese - like any medication it’s benefits vs side effects.
Obesity is a major factor in every major disease and loosing weight reduces that risk enough to take the risk of the other side effect of the drug overall

Do you know what the side effects of obesity are? 13 different cancers for a start.

Op you'd be much better asking these questions on to MJ threads not AIBU where people have no experience

notapizzaeater · 10/05/2024 20:04

Are you sure it's not gallbladder, that's pain under the ribs and into the back and is a known side effect of any quick weight loss regime

spamm · 10/05/2024 20:34

Part of the way MJ works is that it slows down your digestion and makes you feel full. It is possible that the fruit you mentioned is making your digestive system uncomfortable. Some people report challenges with eating raw fruit and veg, because it stays in the digestive system so much longer. Also, while always a possibility, pancreatitis is very rare and is usually accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

I have been on Mounjaro since January and my advice would be to try to eat very plainly until your stomach settles - so things like grilled chicken and simple vegetables like asparagus or green beans, or eggs and vegetables. Try drinking peppermint tea or even water with electrolytes. And start taking a daily probiotic which will really help with your digestion.

ObsidianTree · 10/05/2024 20:36

There are a lot of threads on the weight loss boards about Mounjaro so you are better off posting your question there as there would be more people with knowledge and experience that can help you.

Are you taking something for constipation? mounjaro can affect digestion and slows it down. Maybe take some aloe vera tablets or psylum husks (fibre)to help keep things moving.

Don't think you have answered about what you're eating. As others have said, some foods can cause you to get bad symptoms so you should try to eat a bit cleaner to stop bad side effects. Also drink a lot of water.

lurkylurk · 10/05/2024 21:04

You should stop it for now and get the blood test done and see what comes back just in case. Have you ever had heartburn before? As it's possible it's that and Mounjaro can cause quite bad heartburn. Try taking a heartburn remedy and see if that makes it go, if it does then you'll know it was that.
