Last night noticed lots of tiny brown and black worms in toilet, after nearly vomming I googled and I think these are drain fly larvae??! I tried bicarb of soda, vinegar, bleach, hot water and they are still there. Its so disgusting. What do I do??? Is this a plumber job??

Can you bail the loo out to catch them?that way you'll know you've taken them away, then flush again and see if they come back (in which case it's new ones each time coming from somewhere!) or if the loo stays clear you know it was the same ones not flushing away.

Caustic soda. Open bathroom windows and put rubber gloves on.
Cold water in a bucket, pour entire bottle of caustic soda in and stir with a stick then pour down toilet and leave for an hour then flush.
Try your best not to breathe it in and do NOT get it on your skin. Keep bathroom door closed and any kids or pets downstairs/upstairs

Do not get the type of caustic soda that says it contains drain cleaner - that's not as strong. Also, do not get confused with soda crystals! Not the same thing! Must be 'Caustic Soda'

Been away for a week. Left the bicarb and vinegar mixture all night last night and then flushed through with boiling water. Then today did rounds of bleach then hot water then flush repeated three times

Poor you, that sounds really hard! Just to say do be careful when mixing cleaning products - bicarb and vinegar are great individually but cancel out when mixed. One is acid and the other is a base, so they react with each other rather than dealing with any dirt.

Have you checked up under the rim? Put some rubber gloves on and have a good feel round up under the rim with a brush and also your (gloved) hand. It's surprising how large an area this can be. If they're not there then I guess they must be coming up the u bend somehow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Be very careful if you go the caustic soda route it is definitely effective, but my mother burnt the bathroom floor because the caustic soda spat out a lot...

flatwhiteinabucket · 09/05/2024 10:05

Do you have a picture of them? I can only think they are coming from under the rim and dropping down, as boiling water and bleach would kill most things.

Be careful with caustic soda it can melt plastic pipes- horrific story about flats, man above put it down his loo, it melted pipe and dripped into flat below - through plasterboard ceiling and onto tiny baby in a cot and caused horrific injuries

We had this. Water supplier checked the water (tested it) and said it was fine. Turned out is was a worm from the earth/drain (as opposed to one someone had pooped out) and it's usually if there is an old or cracked pipe supplying or removing water.

Friend has this and she said it means her septic tank needs emptying. (I don't have a septic tank so I've no idea how this works)

I've just got home and there are none today so I'm praying that's the end of it! I've never had anything like this before!
