To dress 2yo in vest still?

I get confused every year once the weather starts changing about how many layers little ones should wear!

It’s currently 19 degrees outside where I live. It’s cooler in my house though. Vest or no vest? What sort of temperate do you put the vests away?

I'm pretty sure DD wore vests all year round.

Hotttchoc · 08/05/2024 14:53

Vests all the time unless it's REALLY hot

mitogoshi · 08/05/2024 14:55

Vests most of the year, sometimes just a vest

Toottooot · 08/05/2024 14:55

Niver cast yer cloot til May’s oot.

Revelatio · 08/05/2024 14:55

I think it depends where you live. We are in London so it doesn’t often get really cold. We stopped using vests before a year old as it worked out that way with winter. Summer is just a t-shirt, then add a jumper in cooler weather. When it’s really cold we use merino wool base layers (long sleeved top and leggings).

Didn’t bother with vests once mine were walking. DS is wearing his nursery uniform of polo shirt, jumper and shorts today. Same as all the other kids in his class who are all 2-3 years old.

AliceMcK · 08/05/2024 14:56

Mine always wore vests unless unbearably hot then it would probably be just a vest or cotton T-shirt.

stackhead · 08/05/2024 14:57

Surely you just feel how hot baby is and dress/undress appropriately?

DD ran hot, she very rarely wore vests except when it was proper freezing.

Pop her in a vest, feel the back of her neck, if hot take it off, if fine, leave it on.

bracemyselfagain · 08/05/2024 14:57

I took my 17m old DD for a walk earlier.
Vest with a baggy jumper and her body temp was fine. At night she wears a sleeping bag style onesie without a vest now.

Although that will undoubtedly change once the real hot weather kicks in.
Dress them in whatever you normally would and put the coat/jacket under your pram just in case; keep checking their chest for body temp.

Mine never wore vests as under garments beyond the baby stages.

RomeoRivers · 08/05/2024 15:01

DS is 20months and he’s just wearing shorts + a tshirt today (20 degrees) I stopped using vests for him when he started walking.

DD is 3.5yrs and I’ve just packed her vests away this morning.

Wallywobbles · 08/05/2024 15:02

Mine were always too hot and stripped down to their pants as soon as they walked in the door and were allowed to undress. For some reason I cannot fathom people think kids don't know when they are hot.

When DD1 was too hot her eczema went insane.

reabies · 08/05/2024 15:02

Mine's 2 next week and still in vests - I prefer them to tshirts as they just get rucked up and his little belly is out all day. So vest instead of tshirt and jumper on top as needed. I don't plan on getting rid of vests til we're potty training and he needs to be able to get undressed quickly.

Everyonesouttogetme · 08/05/2024 15:03

Mine is 2 and still in a long sleeved vest, will move to short sleeved now its warming up but don't expect to stop using them for some time yet.

CTR1000 · 08/05/2024 15:03

Was just debating this in my head this morning! Sent my 2 year old to nursery in a vest and t shirt today but worried he’ll be a bit hot…

What do you do for naps? Does he just keep his T-shirt and shorts on and then sleeping bag? I worry their arms get cold.

I've never used vests past the baby stage, I've been dressing my 2.5 yo and 14 mo in t-shirts and thin leggings the last few days, for 18-19 degrees. And the summer PJ's are out, it's far too hot for long PJ's!! But I'm like you OP, I get so confused when the weather starts changing like what do I dress them in? I just put one of everything in their backpacks for nursery so they can judge what they need to wear at the time.

He naps in his clothes. So if it’s winter he has a tshirt with joggers+ jumper on, today he’s gone to bed in his shorts + tshirt. He has a small kids coverless duvet in his cot. I stopped using sleeping bags once he could stand up.

At nighttime they both have full sleeve/leg pyjamas, but I will be transitioning them to short pjs now the weather has changed.
