Dog hair and carpets - help!

RedQuail · 07/05/2024 15:55

I can't seem to find a hoover that actually works picking up dog hair out of the carpet. I have 2 x rescue dogs short haired but still the amount of hair in the carpet is awful and hoovers just don't seem to pick them up! I have tried a couple of different hoovers all being the pet ones and they say they pick up dog hair but they don't or don't do a great job doing it.

Any recommendations on a hoover that does work? Or any tips/ideas to hair removal ?

Miele Cat and Dog definitely works. I used to do the stairs with a rubber glove, works well but I guess you'd not want to do a whole room like that.

Vax blade pet has been great for us

Try a simple carpet scraper, about £3.50 from amazon

My friend rubber brushes her carpet brings all the dog hair up before she hoovers. I have flooring downstairs our newish dog doesn't really moult that much thankfully. Our last dog was awful no hoover seemed to do a decent job.

I have Miele cat and dog too, and it's great, I have 3 cats. Cylinders in general are better than uprights as every upright I've tried has been rubbish. The Dyson animal cylinder is good too, but not as good as the Miele

My G Tech K9 combo is pretty decent!

my shark cordless was rubbish…

Another vote for Miele cat and dog - have 2 retrievers! Is a bit heavy though.

Henry pet.
We also have the Henry quick pet version.
We also have a Eufy.

And rugs that are washable.

And a pet hair scraper (same as the one up-thread).

Short haired dogs are in some respects worse as the short sharp hairs work their way into the pile, whereas longer softer hair sits on top.

bridgetreilly · 07/05/2024 18:08

Pet hair scraper is the business.

I have just the one golden (7 months old)

And my god, THE HAIR! I brush him daily with a decent quality undercoat brush but it makes no difference at all. My house and clothes are covered within hours of vacuuming!

During his first brushing session I actually removed enough fur to fashion myself another full sized dog…

lovemycbf · 07/05/2024 19:36

A rubber broom and a shark hoover (not cordless though as they're not as good) there's a specific one for pet hair

tabulahrasa · 07/05/2024 19:37

I brush the dogs a bit more often than I think they need it (both short haired) I’ve a shark hoover and it picks up ok… and I buy carpets and rugs that’ll hide fur better 😐😂

I have 2, both mixed race, 1 a very heavy shedder, the other sheds about half the amount. I have started to brush them both every morning. This seems to help the rest of the house. I have 1 rug (concrete floors in the rest of the house). I sweep the floors daily and hoover the rug every day with a bog standard Lidl hoover.

My advice is brush daily. I should have started this sooner.

Rubber broom before vacuuming!

RedQuail · 08/05/2024 06:50

Thank you for all the replies. I brush my dogs at least 4 times a week, maybe doing it daily would be better.

I have a horse grooming rubber brush that I use on the stairs but on my hands and knees doing this in bigger rooms is exhausting and just wondered if there were genuine good hoovers out there that work picking up hair and/ or any other solutions. So thank you for all the tips/suggestions I will look through them all. Thanks again

I have a robot hoover its the only thing that picks up all the hair my white chihuahua sheds constantly. Game changer.

Have a dedicated pair of trainers to wear indoors and 'paw' the carpet. Saves kneeling with rubber gloves etc.

shellyleppard · 08/05/2024 07:33

I run the steam cleaner over the carpet before hoovering.... insane how much fluff comes off it (owner of three mad moggers)

I do this as well sometimes when I don't have time to get the hoover out and I see a particularly hairy spot that needs attention as I'm walking around the house. Our dog is black so it really changes the colour of the floor when he sheds a lot and this is a great quick fix until I've got more time

They're brilliant. Even when the carpet looks clean, it's amazing how much hair it brings up.

KitKatChunki · 08/05/2024 10:30

I've decided to remove all carpet. HTH.
