Successful bid on council property

Posting for traffic as the housing forum is slow.

Possibly soon not to be a Tartful Lodger but a Tartful Tenant.

Miraculously I was placed in position 1 on a council property the weekend and was still position 1 when bidding closed at midnight. Does anyone have experience with how long it usually takes to be contacted for viewing please? It's Redbridge if that helps?

Yes I know 'why don't you call them, we can't tell you', but you can't because they won't tell you anything and it's possible someone on here can actually tell me because they've been where I am with bidding themselves recently.

The problem is -

A) I'm seeing multiple incidents where people have still not been contacted weeks later,

And

B) My anxiety is through the roof to the point I can't eat and feel sick because In more than 3 years of bidding I've never been in position 1 and this property is my absolute dream come true. It's really everything I dreamt of. I'm frightened to believe this is even happening.

Equal measures of scared and anxious, more so because I made the mistake of getting too invested when I realised nobody was out bidding me and I know I'll be devastated if this doesn't work out 😭

I'm just really unfamiliar with how the system works and don't know what happens if you get to position 1 because they don't really tell you much on the website. Has anyone been bidding on council property lately and got to position 1? Was there a long wait to be invited to view?

I feel so nervous I have to keep running to the loo! Really grateful for any feedback , even the ones telling me to just call them and ask. ☺️

Yes, I know I'm being unreasonable for using two emojis in one post. I'll take that one like a woman.

Ok I did it. I went cushion shopping early. Trouble is I’ve now seen even more throws and things I like 😂

Oh that's really lovely! It looks so comfy, and really suits the room. I'm loving the new cushions too Flowers

Oh lovely and homey and comfy. Well done. I hope you get some quality zzzzz time on that couch.

TartfulRidesAgain2 · 25/01/2025 20:15

I actually fell asleep on the settee this afternoon. It was really comfortable as well. This is going to be soooooo easy to snuggle up on! I might not need the bedroom anymore 😂

I’m thinking about getting a couple of decent wall pictures as well because I have the original picture rails in that room so I won’t need to drill anything into the walls. I have some metal picture rail clips somewhere.

All I really need now are a couple of dining chairs for my table and a runner in the hallway and I think I have finally made a home here 😊

I just can’t wait for spring now when I can throw the doors open and sit looking at the garden….which I also have plans for too! ❤️🌸🌻🌺

Another little update. Oh my god I’m so happy! I don’t have many of my mums things left but one thing I’ve managed to keep hold of was one of her dining chairs. It’s nothing amazing but very special to me. I was contemplating getting a new set of chairs for my table then completely unexpectedly I found two in a second hand shop identical to my mums one for £18 so I snapped them up and used my new skills I learned from sanding the floors and sanded them down then varnished them. I now have a lovely set of matching dining chairs too which was the last thing I really needed apart from a couple of rugs. I never thought I’d ever find the same chairs anywhere 😊❤️

WitchDancer · 07/02/2025 09:08

Lovely thread! Such a cute flat @TheTartfulLodger Is that actually social housing? It's gorgeous! 😍I mean, I know that not all social housing is shite, in fact lots of it is decent, but I just wondered. Smile

I love your furniture too!. The dresser is amazing. And the retro looking dining chairs are too.

Hope you will be super happy there. 🤗

It is indeed social housing. The basement was a real surprise. I wasn't expecting that at all. I can still remember placing the bid now and even today I wake up every day thinking I can't believe it happened. I think this was a once in a lifetime though. I've just never seen a council property like this before. It is turning into a lovely home. Beforehand I was out all the time and just didn't want to be at home but now I enjoy being home so much.

TartfulRidesAgain2 · 13/07/2025 11:21

Been a while since I updated this thread. All of my DIY projects were finally completed and I started outdoors trying to make a nice garden to enjoy. It’s been a wonderful spring at the new place and an even better summer. I finally made something of the garden and now have some nice flowers to look at and I tried my hand with growing some tomatoes. Just over the fence are council allotments and I managed to get hold of one which had lots of fruit trees so I’ve been making lots of jam for the pantry in my basement. It has been so peaceful here and I’m now able to relax with the patio doors open and enjoy it. When I think about the long road it took to get here I still pinch myself. I’ve had friends over for dinner more than once which I couldn’t really do before and that has been lovely. Just having a living room to sit in and relax has been heaven. I still think this place was a once in a lifetime opportunity which just happened to appear at the right time which I am so grateful for.

OP here once again losing my logins 😂

Just revisiting this thread again. I’ve been at the new place just over a year now and am approaching my second Christmas here. It has been a wonderful year and a wonderful summer. I managed to grow lots of beautiful annual flowers in my garden and even got an allotment nearby.

The move has been life changing. Currently having the bathroom re fitted for the third time, that’s a story on its own. This time it will be done much more thoroughly and I’m really looking forward to it. The wait has certainly been worth it. It’s a lovely neighbourhood and so peaceful which is exactly what I needed and longed for.

Oh my garland goes back up at the weekend. I can’t wait! That was from Amazon, I bought two and joined them together to fit and you do get lights and decorations with it but not that many so I bought more at Poundland to fill it out. The plastic hooks i used on the sides of the doorframe are transparent so I just leave them there and a tiny blob of superglue keeps them in place, also Poundland. I just used garden twine to tie it to the hooks which you can’t see. The garland is weighty so at the top I put a couple of small metal cup-hooks in to the top of the door frame to take the weight.
