Strep/tonsilitis

Little one is 3, had a fever that breaks with calpol/ibuprofen briefly. We went to out of hours yesterday via 111, the doctor said it was tonsillitis but maybe strep. I questioned this at the time and the doctor said the treatment is the same so not to worry with diagnosis.

I'm worried and don't feel able to manage at home, between doses of medicine temp can get to 40° I was dismissed and told it's normal. Gave max doses of both calpol and ibuprofen yesterday, just given first dose of calpol but we are going to be giving max doses today too as temp is unmanageable. Aibu to just take them to a&e?

@worriedpenguin Was your little one given antibiotics? I feel your pain as DS (also 3) had Strep last month and it was horrendous. Just as a warning - DH and I both caught it too and it was awful so make sure you have plenty painkillers in the house for you too just incase!

@Inyourwildestdreams yes given antibiotics and managed to get two doses in. Ahh I was scared that might be the case, we also have a 10 month old. I'm super anxious about it spreading. Did your little one have a raging fever too?

@worriedpenguin Yes unfortunately. Fever lasted a couple of days. And the peaks started getting less after a full day on antibiotics. Like yours, it broke briefly with Calpol/ibuprofen. It was awful. He was on full doses of both for 2-3 days. I questioned this with our GP as DS wasn’t eating either and she reassured me that it was absolutely fine, just to make sure he stayed hydrated. I was still having to give him Calpol after that for the pain in his throat too.
He also developed a full body rash which was itchy and had to be given constant Piriton.
When DH and I got it we both said it’s the worst we’ve ever felt 😩 so I hope you guys and your baby manage to avoid it 🤞🏼

@Inyourwildestdreams that sounds awful for you all but reassuring for me that this is the normal progression of things. I'll get some piriton in just in case. Thank you for replying.

@worriedpenguin No problem at all. I hope your little one gets better quickly. It goes without saying, they’re all completely different. So if you’re concerned then it definitely doesn’t hurt to have them checked out again ❤️ Temperatures like that always make me nervous too!

Yep my 2 year old had it a couple of months ago fevers spiking 40 every few hours when calpol / ibuprofen wore off. Went to a&E and he was admitted for two nights in isolation ward. He was on 3 different antibiotics including iv.

If you're worried about getting it yourself try gargling neat tcp. It's really awful and kids won't touch it but I've found that it staves off bad throats for me. I've had a lot of throat infections including quinsy and I've found tcp gargling helpful.
