To think it’s nuts to buy a double buggy for your first?

…Because you’re planning to have a second soon?!

Not only might things not work out that way but they’re quite a pain to lug about for months when you don’t strictly need one.

We did, and we bloody loved it. It’s great as a single, great as a double and now it’s being used as a triple! We bought it brand new and it’s been a real workhorse, worth every penny.

What’s it to you, anyway?

sympatheticparrot · 05/05/2024 22:35

I didn’t have one but the bugaboo donkey always looked cool. You could have it as a single with the side basket or extend to a double

ThisBlueCrab · 05/05/2024 22:35

Depends what they are buying...not that it is any of your business if its not you buying it.

The bugaboo donkey is amazing as a single and a double. I only had 1 but I wish I had known about it when dd was a baby. It would have made life so much easier!

Bellienoo · 05/05/2024 22:40

If it’s the bugaboo donkey absolutely not! We bought a single travel system, paid a fair bit for it and fell pregnant again straight away. Ended up with 10 months between our DCs. As soon as we knew we were having number 2 we swapped to the donkey in single mode and then duo when baby arrived. Best pram I’ve ever had, wish I’d have known and bought it first.

PitterPatter3 · 05/05/2024 22:41

As somebody who had a very hard time conceiving, I guess I’m just envious of those who could be so confident there’d be another baby along so soon. I’d feel bad for anyone it didn’t work out for having others assume all the time that they had more than one child when they actually didn’t.

I wouldn't do it myself yet couldn't care less if someone else did.

Creating a thread about it seems a lot crazier than buying a double buggy for your first.

PitterPatter3 · 05/05/2024 22:52

I hadn’t realised how much infertility and loss had affected me. To me it feels like jinxing things terribly. I didn’t even feel comfortable buying anything baby-related at all until well after the 20 week scan.

CelesteCunningham · 05/05/2024 22:57

I wouldn't do it, but there's no harm in it. As others have said, something like the Bugaboo Donkey is a great choice because it works as a single or a double.

ThomasineMay · 05/05/2024 23:04

Don't really see an issue...

Bugaboo donkeys have decent resale value - if I had my time again, I'd buy a second hand donkey mono for baby #1 and then buy a second seat for #2.

stawbly · 06/05/2024 05:24

From your more recent comments, I do understand why you think that way, and I'm sorry you have struggled with fertility.
But also, it took a while for me to conceive #1 and after deciding that we were ready to TTC again, we bought a second hand bugaboo donkey. Perfect as we can use it for our boy now, and if he's still in a pram when #2 comes, great they can use it together, if not, it can still be used as a single.
I think a lot of people do it so it doesn't seem like such a big expense further down the line. If I'd have thought about wanting 2 kids so close in age, I probably would've just got it from the get go.

blue345 · 06/05/2024 06:48

We swapped our first three wheeler for a Phil &Teds double. Wished we'd bought it first time around as you could use it as a single or clip on the double seat.

Unless you're buying a side by side double that's really wide, future proofing makes sense.

JaninaDuszejko · 06/05/2024 06:54

We did it many years ago, bought a Phil and Teds. Worked as a single and a double and used it for all 3DC over the years, it was our only buggy. Makes sense if it works well as a single and as a double.

GreatGateauxsby · 06/05/2024 06:59

Personally i think its economically sensible. Even if we didnt or couldnt have a second it makes no difference and if you do have more kids, it saves you selling amd buying a new pram

I bought a double and i had my first child at 38.
Its currently getting great use with dd and ds.

But it sounds like its not really about a pram though its about yourself and your fertility which is a different ball game. 💐

Isthisexpected · 06/05/2024 07:03

Well lots of doubles can be used a single with storage so it's actually a very good move financially especially if you're happy with a good quality second hand one.

I didn't buy my double until I was 32 weeks and didn't tell a soul not even my mum I was pregnant with what turned out to be DD1 until I was 24 weeks. I was similarity scared of jinxing it after what I'd been through. But I didn't let that stop me hoping I'd have two under three. And I did.

FeatheryStroker · 06/05/2024 07:04

I'm not at all superstitious so I would. I definitely don't think it's fiucking nuts.

If I couldn't have another baby then I don't think I'd feel worse because of the buggy I owned, it's just a thing.

YouveGotAFastCar · 06/05/2024 07:07

A friend of mine did the opposite, wanted a double as she wanted kids close together but got a single instead. It was a silly decision. She’d struggled with infertility before so they started trying as soon as her first was four months old and his brother came along before he turned two. She’s got a selection of bizarre doubles that are cheap and flimsy now, but she hasn’t got a decent one because she feels she invested in the single so that should be her “main” pram. Silly.

Lots of people do manage two close together. 7 of 8 of my NCT lot have a baby now, or are in the last trimester; and we’ve all got two year olds.

I got a pram that could be converted. Two close together hasn’t worked out for us so I won’t need it, my oldest doesn’t use a pram anymore, but I’m glad I gave myself the option.

💐 xx

It makes financial sense if you do plan on having a second child soon after the first (which many do if they’re older in particular). The bugaboo donkey makes sense for this because it can be a single too.

idreamoftoddlersleepytime · 06/05/2024 07:10

You'll use the spare seat as a wheelbarrow.

Willmafrockfit · 06/05/2024 07:13

i think its nuts
i always understood it was bad luck to buy before the birth
so this is even more so

bubblesforbreakfast · 06/05/2024 07:14

I would. Phil and Ted, bugaboo donkey, baby jogger city select all work well as a single.

onefinalhurdle · 06/05/2024 07:18

I bought a standard silver cross for my first I wish I'd planned ahead and bought the one which could be adapted into a double - I did have multiple lossses but did end up having twins and buying a whole new pram again was soooo expensive when I had a perfectly good single silver cross in the loft 😢

Willmafrockfit · 06/05/2024 07:28

but surely you could have sold the good single silver cross @onefinalhurdle

Yes the latter is what I meant. I was thinking of some poor person pushing around something like this for months on end with an empty seat. Sounds like there are more double buggies around than I thought which are not like this and don’t give the impression of someone being missing.

But in general yes it does break my heart to see others with that innocent belief I lost years ago that of course they’ll be able to conceive and carry to term again soon if that’s what they want.

I think it’s a little weird to buy a side by side but I wish I’d gone for a single to double! We bought an icandy Lime for DD - after nearly a year of trying. Her younger brother was a complete surprise and arrived 19 months later… swapped the Lime for a Peach and I really wish I’d had the Peach from the get go!

onefinalhurdle · 06/05/2024 07:43

@Willmafrockfit

Youd be surprised how hard it is to sell pram systems and how little they are worth - maybe only around 25% of its original value - and mine was in lovely condition - it was listed for months and months and months across several selling sites and never sold

New it was around £1500 - if I had spent about £250 more to get the wave which can convert to a double I would have then saved myself the £1750 when I had to get one when I fell pregnant with twins 😂
