To be annoyed a friend lied about their address on a school application to get into an oversubscribed school

I've recently found out a friend has lied on their school application by using another family members address to get their child into an oversubscribed school. The school is one I would have considered but would have been unlikely to get in as its very popular. Friend lives quite far but plans to move within the next few years closer to the school so wants their child at the school now. Its just annoyed me as I know many people who didn't get a place who are more local and feels Iike friend is misusing the system. Friend was able to get a letter with their name on it at the address by signing up for a credit card/store card I believe. I know its none of my business but I just feel annoyed about it now

It's the children of the parents who lie about where they live I feel really sorry for. They have parents who are teaching them that being dishonest is how to behave. Then when the lie gets found out, the child's place is removed and they have to tell their friends that they are no longer going to the school they'd told everyone they were going to and that their parents are liars.

That is a good point, unless they do actually move to stay with relatives or whatever, for at least some of the time. I wouldn't want my child to see me as a liar. However, I still wouldn't be an informant. I just couldn't do that for an issue like this one.

I wouldn't grass someone up. She should have kept it to herself.

Exactly it's hardly crime of the century

Lovely

Thank you. .. I'm very comfortable with whom I am. You and I clearly would never be friends. So not something you have to worry about..

Changedasouting · 06/05/2024 14:24

To be honest I have done it I am also from Liverpool I just needed to show something with my name and address on (not council tax) but their was no was I was putting my child in to school by us. You need to do what you need to do to give your child the best start. We now live more local to the school and it’s nearly impossible to get a place if you don’t at start of infants / seniors

Council tax.
utility bill.
bank statement.

There multiple ways of proving but also endless possible repercussions. It’s completely foolish.

I only had bank statement of those. It wasn't my own home so no household bills.

You would be on the electoral role

Can the LA view this if you have needed to opt out of the open register?

Yes. They see the full version, not the one that's available for junk mail and arsehole exes.

I’ve done loads of home visits. It will be obvious. You might ask the child to go and fetch their favourite toy to show you. You can tell when a young family live in a house.

What would you do at this point if you suspected this?
Our school does home visits literally the day before the child starts - would you try to get them removed?

Lovinglife57 · 06/05/2024 10:46

And I find your post of insinuating I’m an idiot insulting …consider it reported

You're reporting a post but wouldn't report it is someone you knew committed fraud. Somewhat ironic.

Lovinglife57 · 06/05/2024 11:36

Would you report your friend for this and if so I would hope you would tell her I'm reporting you ...Nice friend

I would report anyone . If it was a friend I would end the friendship because I don’t like fraudulent liars !

Lovinglife57 · 06/05/2024 11:48

How many ppl on this thread would actually report a FRIEND for this ?....me no chance

I'd report a friend if it was the reason my child missed out on a school place. Especially if it resulted in a complicated journey to a more distant school.

Would you just accept that?

Let's get this right ...I said I wouldn't report a FRIEND.....A FRIEND... regards to what op is saying 🙄

Lovinglife57 · 06/05/2024 15:26

I'm going to say this ONE more time then I'm leaving this thread can I be clear I WOULD NOT REPOET A FRIEND FOR THIS hope this is clarity for the ones who keep asking the question I'm done now its draining

StormingNorman · 05/05/2024 21:03

I couldn’t do that to a child. They’ll be getting excited about their new school already.

My friend's child had to walk to a school a mile further away, past the school they wanted and that all their friends went to. What about their feelings?

Lovinglife57 · 06/05/2024 15:07

I have friends who have decency and an ability to know it's not all about them and their families.

I prefer that to your sort of friendship.

Lovinglife57 · 06/05/2024 12:53

Totally not relevant to post your talking about Burring bodies grow up

Your grammar is appalling.

alongwaytobed · 06/05/2024 15:38

@Liverpoollass2 it'll be all on your friend whether her child loses the place before they start or whether they're kicked out after starting to settle in, and regardless of whether you report her, someone else does or whether the fraudulent application is exposed through the variety of checks which the school, local authority or trust, use.

So don't worry, the guilt is all hers

Crunchymum · 06/05/2024 15:41

I've never, ever heard of anywhere in England that allows you to use a storecard as proof of address to get a school place.

@Liverpoollass2 can you post the list of acceptable forms of ID / proof of address from the school?

Can anyone else from Liverpool corroborate that you can use a store card as proof of address for school admission?

It's all down to Council Tax where I am (and by the looks of this thread seems to be the same where lots of other people are)

I was never asked for it. I used a GP letter which I hadn't needed proof of address to get in the first place. If you are staying with family as you don't currently have your own home then you aren't going to be on the council tax or household bills. Though they can check you aren't paying elsewhere.
