being refused entry to cafes etc with a pushchair

Visited a cheshire market town today with a friend. We were refused entry to two cafes because we had buggies. We were quite suprised. What are your thoughts on this? Anybody else had similar problems?

I suppose they are within their rights to ask you to fold the buggies, but to refuse you entry full stop? Odd behaviour. Who are their clientele? Where I live cafes are almost entirely full of mothers and babies during the week.

ImPinkThereforeImSpam · 02/04/2008 20:21

Oooooohhh! That's not on! I wonder if they treat wheelchairs the same way?

LynetteScavo · 02/04/2008 20:21

It happened to me once.

Should have seen me carry a tray, and a 5 month old at the same time, while making sure 4 year old behaved.

fryalot · 02/04/2008 20:21

All the cafes near to me allow children in. But some do not allow buggies and pushchairs.

It is purely a space issue - two pushchairs and nobody would be able to move.

There is another one that has a notice on the door that says that if you have a fully fold-able pushchair you are welcome to come in if you fold it up and put it under the seat, other than that, they regret to say that they will be unable to serve you.

It doesn't bother me tbh. If I particularly want to go to one of the places I can't with a pushchair, I used to carry ds. Now he's a bit older, he can walk to most places.

Slubberdegullion · 02/04/2008 20:22

ooooh was it Tarporley? They are not loving the old buggies there.

I guess it's a space issue really, some cafes (or tea shoppes where I more commonly frequent ) tend to be squished into funny little olde houses with slanty floors and manouvering around a couple of push chairs can be a pita

fryalot · 02/04/2008 20:22

Don't know what they do about wheelchairs, but the one that springs to mind is a really old building with steps up to it, so not exactly wheelchair friendly anyway.

scottishmummy · 02/04/2008 20:23

have been refused entry to cafe when there was clearly room.no reason given just no buggy love

Janni · 02/04/2008 20:24

Did you feel that the issue was 'pushchair' or 'small children' ??

Remember one cafe where I was told 'we're not really geared up for pushchairs' and I knew by the look on his face that he meant 'we don't want small children here'.

Eve34 · 02/04/2008 20:25

Sorry to be a bit off but how about saying people who use wheelchairs instead of just wheelchairs

Sorry to hear you couldn't get their loss but understnad it might be a fire issue in some places.

When I lived in East London our doctors would not allow buggies inside the surgery, they had to be left outside

Kathyis6incheshigh · 02/04/2008 20:29

I have a bike lock because I am paranoid about leaving Phil & Ted outside.

fryalot · 02/04/2008 20:30

If I knew where Kathy lived I would be quite likely to try and steal her P & T

fingerwoman · 02/04/2008 20:30

I think that wheelchair users are different. I would bet my bottom dollar that most places would not have a problem with people in wheelchairs using their cafes
but if they regularly get clogged up with lots of mums with pushchairs then I can understand why they don't want them there. I mean, you can end up with pushchairs taking up space that paying customers could be using I suppose.

there is a lovely cafe in a park near me that has a no buggies rule, but if you go and it's really quiet then they're usually pretty lax about it.

OverMyDeadBody · 02/04/2008 20:31

Good for you riven!

Slubberdegullion · 02/04/2008 20:31

or was it Knutsford, or even Frodsham ?

I want to know

missdashwood · 02/04/2008 20:32

There was a message on the front window of one place saying no prams/pushchairs which we saw on the way out when we realised it was a bit of a tight sqeeze! Totally understand the space issue, but the second place we choose specifically because it had loads of space and we were flatly told no at the door. We would have happily taken babies out, but we weren't even given the chance to ask.

Graciefer · 02/04/2008 20:33

I wonder where that would leave my DS1 who uses a maclaren major special needs buggy.

morningpaper · 02/04/2008 20:33

There was a cafe in Lyme Regis that refused us entry becasue of the push chair

and they were REALLY rude

on the corner, sold dodgy scones

don't go there

scottishmummy · 02/04/2008 20:33

blimey! no buggies at GP- complain to PCT and PALS

Slubberdegullion · 02/04/2008 20:34

Tattenhall maybe?

Slubberdegullion · 02/04/2008 20:35

or Nantwich?

I'm just going to keep going you know......

missdashwood · 02/04/2008 20:35

Suspect it was an issue with babies more than pushchair. It was Nantwich by way.

OP posts:
moaningminnie2020 · 02/04/2008 20:35

Was it Nantwich??

moaningminnie2020 · 02/04/2008 20:36
