Should big businesses eg supermarkets etc still profit During tough times?

When times get tough and wallets feel lighter, it's easy to wonder why big businesses for example supermarkets etc, continue to rake in profits. After all, shouldn't they be sharing the burden and helping out when the going gets tough ?

Personally they still need to make a profit to continually offer the services to the public.

Maybe the prices should stay the same.... people still need to eat so will spend the money

And they should pay staff more ££ instead?

That is the point of capitalism, OP.

What you want is social democracy at best but you are straying into communism, tbh.

i did wonder if that would be the case, but its odd people want to be part of a capitalist society and get rich as poss, but then when its supermarkets or other big companies, somehow its then omg from the public , thats puzzling ?

Tell me you've never studied economics without telling me you've never studied economics.

So prices should stay the same while they pay employees more? That math won't work.

Blackrock and Vanguard are the biggest shareholders of Tesco. They would no longer invest if there were no profits. Eventually there would be no Tescos, or any other large grocers. Then prices would increase because small businesses do not have the economies of scale that larger businesses do.

Supermarkets operate with narrow profit margins, and their input costs have gone up. Therefore prices rise. The only thing you can do is shop around and hope for the best.
