No hot water in hotel - what discount?

Staying in a hotel for the bank holiday. It’s very pleasant, albeit definitely not the five star it claims to be. Yesterday had a barely lukewarm shower but water was cold by time DH hopped in. No hot water at all now. I’ve just emerged from a freezing shower. Staff know and they had a handyman in yesterday to try and do something. Appears not to have worked at all. We leave tomorrow. What would you think would be reasonable to request as a deduction of the bill?

How much did you pay for the room?

mitogoshi · 05/05/2024 08:33

I'd be expecting 50% off the room cost but not a discount on any food costs, though in the form of a voucher not money back.

TheTorturedPoetsDept · 05/05/2024 08:35

50% discount minimum.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 05/05/2024 08:37

This happened to me very recently in Florence and we were given a 25% discount which we thought reasonable.

£280 which seems way too much for me (It wasn’t me who booked it!)

I'd expect a discount on the room of 50%.

It sounds like it's going to be a complicated fix if the engineer spent all day trying yesterday and couldn't get it sorted so I'd also be expecting them to be the ones offering the discount rather than the guests having to ask.

BranchGold · 05/05/2024 08:44

£280 per night?

I’d be so annoyed!

BranchGold · 05/05/2024 08:45

Does the issue seem to be localised to a particular area/room of the hotel, or everywhere? I’d be expecting to get my room moved if it’s only an issue where I was.

NOTANUM · 05/05/2024 08:46

As it’s a 5 star, then I’d ask for a discount. Hot water is pretty basic.

If I was on a one night city break where the city was the main show and not the hotel, I probably wouldn’t.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 05/05/2024 08:47

Oh no. Not this again. We had this recently with the poster who got an unrequested wake up call in an expensive swiss hotel.

I think you it is reasonable to complain and see what they offer. Other people will tell you that you are grabby and they have suffered far worse and kept a stiff upper lip.

welshycake · 05/05/2024 08:48

50% per morning you were unable to have a hot shower

PBandJ111 · 05/05/2024 08:49

50% per day with no hot water

WhatDaPoint · 05/05/2024 08:49

What type of hotel? Is it a chain hotel or a boutique hotel? Was the £280 just for the room.

I think I'd expect 100% but 50% would be ok.

Or I'd ask for a credit for a free night at another time if that was suitable.

Not being able to have a hot shower is pretty bad.

FanofLeaves · 05/05/2024 08:53

50% at a bare minimum. Maybe the offer of a free stay for a night in addition. They should have moved you to room that had hot water if it’s a problem in that room.

Wimbledonmum1985 · 05/05/2024 08:57

Not a chain. It’s a very old property. Have just heard DH yelp as he hopped into shower. Mine lasted c two minutes. Could t bear any longer. On flip side will hopefully feel wide awake all day thanks to shock of cold water!

I would have expected a full refund and gone home.

Yellowtrouser · 05/05/2024 09:00

PurpleCacao · 05/05/2024 09:07

50%

WhatDaPoint · 05/05/2024 09:59

I still think 100%. I hate cold showers.

Oblomov24 · 05/05/2024 10:05

I hate cold showers with a passion,

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/05/2024 10:07

Sounds like it is something beyond their control and they are trying to fix it.

I would expect a partial refund or at least some kind of gesture like free drinks or vouchers, but I wouldn't let it ruin my break. No one died of a cold shower.

Msmumm · 05/05/2024 10:11

We had an issue similar several years ago. We had gone for a couple of child free nights away in a 5 star hotel. Went to have a shower to get ready for dinner on the first night, no hot water. We ended up having no hot water the whole weekend. We went to have breakfast on our second morning to be told that chef had cooked what he had and gone home. Everything he had cooked had gone out so there was nothing left but they could make us a coffee and give us a couple of croissants. It was like Faulty Towers. Spoke to the manager who was less than useless so we sent an email to the head office on return.
They didn't give us any refund but offered us a free weekend in a family suite with our children and tickets to local attractions. I thought this was a fair offer and have since been back and stayed again with no problems.
I think I would be asking for at least a 50% refund.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 05/05/2024 10:16

Ask, and see what they say or offer and then consider your next move.

IMO, no hot water for when I needed a bath/shower would have a massive impact but other times, not bothered in a hotel

WhatDaPoint · 05/05/2024 10:18

@razorbladethroat

I've had free nights stays before for noise issues on three different occasions. Like I said I'd be ok with a 50% discount but I'd be happier with a 100% discount.

£280 suggests a good hotel. I'd expect hot water as a given.
