To remind you all to throw out old hot water bottles

I just learned the hard way that old ones do burst and boiling water actually can remove skin from your body! I never realised it could cause such damage and assumed if it happened I'd have a light red mark not a nurse peeling skin off my thigh! If it's more than 2 years replace it!

Wow, hope you are ok op.

One of mine is over 30 years old and I still use it daily in the winter! Maybe they were made more solidly back then? Anyway I'll bin it and replace it!

Same here! Over 30 years old. It does seem pretty solid, I think it’s a British made one. It doesn’t often get much use to be honest so maybe it depends on that? My mum takes one to bed daily though so I’ll let her know

CaravaggiosCat · 05/05/2024 06:46

I posted on a similar post a year or so ago that Dd had tied hers into her tracksuit bottoms for period cramps. It had fresh hot water with no cover and burst from her belly down to her thighs, then she struggled to undo said knot to get her joggers off. She's fortunate in that it's all healed nicely but at the time we weren't so sure.
Hope you manage to enjoy your holiday.

Owwwwwww! Get well soon.

(I now fill it from the tap rather than the kettle, because I'm a klutz. Not as toasty, but you can always go and top it up again.)

The advice in that link is not to use water straight from the tap due to the high copper content as it comes out

MariaVT65 · 05/05/2024 06:53

Thank you for the reminder op, i’ll get some new ones!

I’d recommend the ones they sell in Boots. I’ve always had them for ages and never had a problem.

Really hope you recover soon op!!

Marchingonagain · 05/05/2024 07:30

Oh wow, thanks for sharing. I sent my child to her with one in the winter when it was really cold. Feel a bit sick now :( Will Chuck them as all are way over 4 years old!

SannaK · 05/05/2024 07:47

Thank you for this info, get better soon. X

MolkosTeenageAngst · 05/05/2024 07:54

This is why you shouldn’t use boiling water, always add some cold water if you’ve filled from the kettle so if it does burst it’s not hot enough to severely burn.

Rainyblue · 05/05/2024 08:01

I never use just boiling water, as I think it’s too dangerous. I always put some cold water into the bottle first and then top it up with the water from the kettle. Ours have covers as well.

Mammma91 · 05/05/2024 08:03

I just binned 2, one I know for sure is at least 7 years old! I hope you’re ok OP. That must’ve been agony! How are you this morning, is it badly blistered?

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 05/05/2024 08:05

OP I hope you heal quickly and aren't in too much pain.

Mine burst one night last year. Will never use one again

Iloveshoppingforbooks · 05/05/2024 09:22

Electric hot water bottles all the way!

Oblomov24 · 05/05/2024 09:38

Sorry to see that. I had no idea, ours too is over 20 years old.

MargaretThursday · 05/05/2024 09:41

My parents still use one we had as children. They don't full it from the kettle though, they use the hot water tap.
I use the microwave ones now, much nicer.

CornedBeef451 · 05/05/2024 09:45

I'm so sorry OP, that looks awful!

I never use boiling water though, just tap water.

Toastjusttoast · 05/05/2024 09:52

Oh bad luck op. Get better soon.

I’ve had two split in the last 3 years but they were used daily. I was lucky that I was only using them to heat up my bed when they split.

Noseyoldcow · 05/05/2024 09:55

Thanks for the warning. I hope you heal very quickly, but bearing in mind your upcoming holiday, remember your new skin will be very sun sensitive, so you will need to take extra care about sun exposure.

You poor thing, that looks sooo painful. I just bought ours a few months ago as like to snuggle with it on sofa in evening as has been chilly. How did you manage after you got scalded. Did you have anyone with you at the time to help you. Hope you feel better soon and not in too much pain.

I just pulled all my clothes off then threw cold wet kitchen roll on. I sat for about 10 mins not sure what to do or if I was over reacting then called my friend to come look at it. She drove me to a&e as I couldn't bend my leg to drive! I think I was more embarrassed/annoyed at myself and didn't want to waste hospital time! I realised straight away if was my fault and should have known better! The nurses were lovely though and kept saying these things happen and not to be so hard on myself x

Il be doing this going forward once I get over the fear! I knew better but didn't think it would happen to me. I also didn't realise how bad it could be I figured a light scald at worse. I was very wrong!

It’s never occurred to me to throw out old hot water bottles so thanks for the reminder OP and so sorry you’ve found out the hard way. I’ve currently got an ear infection and swollen face so have a HWB on my face constantly. I bought the one on the left last year so I assume the 23 means 2023? In that case the one on the right is 2007 and that’s not my oldest one!

The top part of my leg was blistered and the skin was coming off which had to be removed. I was terrified it was going to hurt but I couldn't feel it (greys anatomy must not be correct when they do it!) But the nurse assured me because it was already dead it wouldn't hurt which was right! I have an appointment tomorrow to get the dressing changed so will review the damage properly then x

ouch - looks painful

wheat bags are the way to go

friskybivalves · 05/05/2024 10:04

Can i recommend Beurer heating pads? Recognised European brand. They plug in. No hot water, no danger of scalds and burns. Brilliant. Available from many online retailers.

Notthatcatagain · 05/05/2024 10:06

I have a microwave hottie. No water involved just 2 minute zap

TheChosenTwo · 05/05/2024 10:08

Omg that sounds so bloody painful, you poor thing.
I didn’t know they had expiry dates, I don’t use them myself but dds do for period pain, am going to round them up and bin them and order new today.
Sorry you’re been though this and I hope you heal quickly but thanks for raising it - I just thought they’d work forever! I mean I’ve definitely heard before that they can occasionally burst but didn’t realise they actually expired for real!

nutbrownhare15 · 05/05/2024 10:09

I now make sure the water is never hot enough to burn. Even a new one could split.
