Reckon I blew my chance? (Job related)

I had an interview on Tuesday and I thought it went well, it was with a lady and a gentleman they were very nice and it was more of a casual chat than an interview.

They said I'd hear back by the end of the week so I've been hanging around my phone all week and they didn't call.

So at 4pm (they close at 4.30pm) I thought I'd call and thank them for the opportunity and ask for feedback on my interview assuming I hadn't been successful as I have another couple of job interviews this week and with me thinking it went well, I wanted to see where I went wrong.

They only have one person manning the phones ( I applied to be the second person ) and he told me the lady I had an interview with had gone home as she was stressed and tired which fair enough so I asked to speak to the gentleman but that was the big boss and he couldn't put me through which again fair enough but he did say he was told I was a great candidate and had loads of experience. He said I'd have to wait until Tuesday now and apologised for me having to stew over the week so I'm hoping that's a good sign but I really don't know.

I'm just worried I've come across too keen, I guess I was trying to show them I was really interested (which I am, it's a great role and the company and people seem really nice. I think I'd like working there) but now I feel like a complete idiot.

Is it just the case of wait and see on Tuesday or hope the other interviews I have go well?

Wait and see.

BlxckDay · 06/05/2024 22:53

I guess that's all I can do really.

It's a shame because I can't really ask for feedback again if they don't call tomorrow so I won't really know what went wrong.

Job hunting is hard 🙃

  1. Don't worry, hopefully you'll get good news
  2. Definitely call for feedback again in a few days if you hear nothing
  3. Don't assume you've not got the job if you don't hear back, sometimes things happen and feedback is delayed.

Good luck!

TBH feedback is really a waste of time. You either get offered or not. It sounds like you still have a good chance here, I don't think that you have done anything wrong. Fingers crossed for some good news for you in the morning.

CountryMumof4 · 06/05/2024 23:07

I don't think it's unreasonable to call, given you were told you'd hear by the end of the week. In my company, following up after an interview at this point definitely wouldn't be considered to be a negative. Keeping everything crossed for good news for you!

Ticktapticktap · 06/05/2024 23:08

I don't think you can come across as too keen.

But secondly I will say that I've recruited several times and feedback is really a token gesture. Very rarely is there just one clear winning candidate at interview, in my experience it's usually so close that it comes down to something the other candidate's couldn't necessarily improve on, just something else that the winning candidate has.

If you got to interview stage, assume you are doing well and are qualified and keep trying

conniecon · 06/05/2024 23:18

Not the point but how unprofessional to tell you the one recruiter had gone home because she was stressed!

ThinWomansBrain · 06/05/2024 23:26

they will have made their decision from the interviews - that you called won't change that decision.

Agree with PP - don't rely on feedback too much, it's great when employers take the trouble to contact applicants, but they're not always honest.
(My favourite being "it was such a hard decision between you and one other candidate, and we would have loved to offered you the role" - me - "right, but another agency has just called and asked if I wanted to apply for the role")

Hope it's good news tomorrow, but think positive and I hope the others go well too.

Also a bit odd to comment about applicants to a prospective future colleague that wasn't present at the interview - and for them to tell you.

ACynicalDad · 06/05/2024 23:35

I very much doubt you calling will change the outcome, but if probably have stuck to an email. Take feedback with a pinch of salt. Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes you’re searching desperately for something to say.

Thank you everyone.

It's not the end of the world I just wish I'd be put out of my misery so I can move on Grin

I'll just prepare for my next interview best I can, you win some and you lose some but it's so deflating.
