Not married/ no kids. Very early days into new relationship. 30 yo. In London (for now).

I socialise often but I genuinely think I only do this for mental stimulation. Would love to find something else to preoccupy my time.

When I’m at my parents home I enjoy cooking and gardening with them but for some reason they don’t “stick in London”. Would love a dog but don’t have time for one. Do volunteer fortnightly at rescue centre but find it sad tbh.

Thinking about getting back into horse riding. Sailed briefly as a kid but was useless tbh.

i have a Friend whose hobby is to visit waterfalls. Something like that would be neat.

Contemplating Astro-photography. Golf? Maybe furniture restoration.

Money shouldn’t be an issue but I do recognise specialist equipment can be very £££££.

Any ideas?

Gosh, I envy so many of you. Such unique and fun interests.
If I had time I would be
going to a pottery class
making hats (millinery)
yoga teacher training
more running

You don’t need to be good at sailing to enjoy it (and I speak from experience!)
If you want to give sailing another go, how about this?
https://www.northlondonsailing.org/

I was about to dispute this (where I live now, if you’re not reasonably good at sailing, you’re endangering your own life taking a boat out), but I imagine it’s a different matter on the West Reservoir (though when I lived nearby, I did once see a dangerous near-miss between a boat and some swimmers.)

I don't know if this is of any use, but I am now a tourist in my own (historic and interesting) city. Seems to me that so many come here on trips and tours galore but a lot of the sights and things they do - I haven't done YET!

So I signed up to a city history/culture website newsletter. I am loving the walking tours and have met some lovely and interesting people too. I now have my name down as a volunteer walk leader so we shall see if they'll have me!

Perfectpots · 04/05/2024 13:59

Visiting waterfalls sounds cool.

Other ideas - visiting castles,
Climbing (indoor rock climbing and outdoor)
Canoeing
Painting eg watercolour or acrylic

I just started cake decorating in December as a hobby and I love it. Lots of people have commented on the cakes that I should sell them but that will take away from the hobby part. I do it once a month so 5 birthdays and the rest are all made up like val, Christmas, Father’s Day, etc and I made one for a friend’s baby shower as well.
During lockdown, I started learning the piano on an app I subscribe for and I’ve loved it too. I used to play for 30 minutes a day but now it’s more like 3 times a week but it’s lovely.

TheChosenTwo · 04/05/2024 14:05

You all such interesting hobbies!
I do jigsaws in the winter months but in the warmer weather (so still not jet!) I don’t want to be inside at all. I do a lot of walking mostly on my own but sometimes I will borrow a dog or find a friend.
i don’t live on my own but only dd1 will really ever come with me (she lives away at uni but when she comes home we take long walks to a pub 😂).
I’m feeling inspired to find a new hobby.

Sewing - should be lots of courses in London and it is such a great skill to be able to make clothes that fit you exactly and mend or adjust old clothes.
Pottery - so absorbing to do, and again, really great to make things for yourself and use them.
Painting - I'm an absolutely rubbish artist, but I really enjoy the process, maybe a paint by numbers thing to start with?
Cinema membership - depends where you are in London, but I remember some do a number of free tickets/cheap tickets. Maybe take yourself to see a film at random once a week, something you wouldn't usually see?

Postcrossing, not much effort but posting postcards abroad is quite expensive compared to other countries posting to the UK. It's joyful to received a postcard from overseas and for me exciting when someone has received the card you sent and sends you a message. I haven't been doing it long but I'm already email pals with a lady in Belarus. I have a separate email address for Postcrossing and we email snipits and photos of the area around us.

I love this idea! Love getting post and really don't write enough these days, so will be doing this 😊

Imatorturedpoet · 04/05/2024 14:29

I buy cuttings of indoor plants on Etsy and then propagate from the plants once they've grown, I now have lots of different interesting house plants and gift the cuttings to friends.

Imatorturedpoet · 04/05/2024 14:30

Sorry posted too soon! I also make terrariums with the cuttings. Kits are quite cheap to buy and once you know what you're doing you don't even need a kit. I pick up empty jars in charity shops.

RabbitsRock · 04/05/2024 14:40

Martial arts? I took up karate at 45 & absolutely loved it. Fittest I’ve been in my life! I only quit after an injury but that was at work! Made loads of friends, some of whom I’m still in touch with.
Sculpture.
Crystal healing or any other “ alternative” therapy. I did a reflexology course which was very interesting & met one of my closest friends there.
Calligraphy
Maybe try water sports again - you could well be better at them as an adult

calimali · 04/05/2024 14:43

Geocaching - you will find so many brilliant hidden places in London that you have never seen before.

Justspeculating45 · 04/05/2024 14:44

Parkrun? Volunteering as a Marshall or running.

buffyslayer · 04/05/2024 14:44

Netball?

Get into cryptic crosswords. It’s fun, mentally stimulating, and makes you feel very smug.

Oh! I just recalled that when I was a teenage I decided to find the place that sold the perfect chocolate eclair in my city. My very patient father and I went every Saturday to a different place and I wrote up little reviews. (Later I started a food blog when DS1 was born 14 years ago so kind of the same thing).

I fancy recreating that idea with the Dcs. A new little cafe every weekend. (I am very food oriented).

I did this many years ago with custard slices. If you are ever in Swansea, the first bakery inside the market, opposite the butchers, Whitewalls entrance. They came out tops.

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/05/2024 15:42

You live in London - the world's your oyster.

In thr years I have loved in London I have done - kickboxing, kung fu, a postgraduate economics qualification, countless walks/exhibiitons/gigs, yoga courses, jewellery making, creative writing, sewing classes, open air swimming, community volunteering.

Caroparo52 · 04/05/2024 15:48

Giving back through volunteering is very rewarding. Local food bank or the Cinnamon Trust where you walk the dog of an elderly person who cannot get out

Nameychango · 04/05/2024 16:52

Ceramic painting / pottery - I've always loved going to those cafes where you can paint something, then they glaze and fire it! I'm still tempted to get myself a second hand kiln and get all the unglazed pots and paints! I can lose myself for hours doing it

Geocaching - you will find so many brilliant hidden places in London that you have never seen before.

How would you get started on that?

Wigeon · 04/05/2024 17:12

@Abracadabra12345 - you just sign up on the website /app: https://www.geocaching.com/play. Think it's £25 a year. Well worth it! You can plan entire walks around where there are geocaches to find.

Other ideas:

My 12 year old DD has just taught herself to crochet via YouTube tutorials and has just crocheted a jumper for herself! (Not her first project).

Reenactment - https://www.historic-uk.com/LivingHistory/ReenactorsDirectory/ - can involve making your own costume, research into your historical period of choice etc etc. If you like Tudors then I can recommend a group!

I've just finished researching the history of the owners and occupants of my Victorian house (we have almost all the deeds), which has been fascinating!

I know you do some volunteering OP - there are so many other opportunities. Trustee, school governor, Samaritan (or other helpline volunteer, eg Childline), magistrate, local litter picking groups etc etc.

Living History societies, associations and reenactors
