Netflix no longer supported on my TV

Netflixreject · 04/05/2024 09:36

I've got a message on my TV when trying to use the Netflix app that it is no longer supported on my device!
Headed over to Netflix.com to find out what was going on and they have a tiny message on the supported devices page saying Netflix will no longer work on some pre 2014 devices. Maybe I should have been warned of this in advance? Seems a bit unfair Netflix!!
Anyone else going tv shopping today?

Maybe get a Roku box instead. I use one with my 2006 TV.

mibosh · 04/05/2024 09:37

you could get a firestick and use the amazon app on that instead - cheaper than whole new tv

GrumpyPanda · 04/05/2024 09:38

Amazon fire stick works with TVs that aren't internet capable.

Emmelina · 04/05/2024 09:39

If you have a gaming console on that TV you should be able to just download the Netflix app to that and access that way?

ajdhpoqnavd · 04/05/2024 09:39

This so why I hate smart TVs, the physical TV tends to last a lot longer than the software which will inevitably stop being supported at some stage. The issue isn't with Netflix, but your television model. You'll be fine with an Amazon stick or similar as that is much cheaper to replace should that ever become unsupportable.

ViscountessMelbourne · 04/05/2024 09:41

Can you get a chromecast and plug it in? (Needs an HDMI slot) At 35 quid it's a lot cheaper than a telly.

NotJohnMajor · 04/05/2024 09:42

Sell your old TV, with the Netflix incompatibility stated as a reason for sale and offering a good price - lots of people don't use Netflix (I don't) and would be pleased to pick up a bargain.

ElderlyAuntHelp · 04/05/2024 09:44

Just get a fire stick, that’s what we did.

ajdhpoqnavd · 04/05/2024 09:52

Sell your old TV

Why? The TV still works, she just needs an Amazon stick or similar (and to never buy a "smart" tv again!)

How do you not buy a smart TV? I thought that they all were, as standard?
I got a really good deal from sky for broadband, basic TV and netflix £26.

twoandcooplease · 04/05/2024 09:58

Like others have said getting a firestick

I do agree they should have let you know though. Similar happened to us with our old iPad - very annoying

Seeline · 04/05/2024 09:58

I use a Google Chromecast. Run Netflix, prime, all the catch up services and youtube from my phone and cast it to the TV via the Chromecast.
Works brilliantly and much cheaper than most methods.

fashionqueen0123 · 04/05/2024 10:03

Just get a firestick! Or if you have Sky you can watch Netflix on that

Netflixreject · 04/05/2024 10:07

Thanks for all of the ideas.
The TV always had to have like a dongle for Internet to work so I am assuming this is why it no longer works.
I hate waste so will look at the Firestick

@Ponoka7 no lots of TVs don't have the smart functionality, I used to say just don't pay more for smart because it's not worth it, but now I actively avoid them because we had a smart TV that got corrupted in some way, crashed, and was completely unusable despite the hardware being fine, that doesn't happen to bog standard TVs, and seeing as TVs can last decades I don't want to have to replace more regularly because of the smart functionality, easier to keep software up to date with external devices.

Bobbotgegrinch · 04/05/2024 12:42

This is why I never even look at the smart functionality when buying a new TV. It's always going to be a bit crap and then become obsolete. Buy a TV based on picture quality and price, and then get a Chromecast or fire stick or whatever for Netflix etc.

SpeedwellBlue · 04/05/2024 12:53

We have an old TV and bought a firestick for about £30 and can now see all the channels like amazon prime etc

Lightt · 04/05/2024 13:05

We bought our TV in 2010, it’s not a smart tv but we use an Amazon fire stick with it and it works fine to watch Netflix on. We have had/have newer TVs elsewhere in our house but nothing’s outlasted this one!

CranfordScones · 04/05/2024 13:22

How about cancelling Netflix and telling them this perpetual need to dispose of perfectly good hardware just because big corporations can't be bothered to support it is not sustainable.

ajdhpoqnavd · 04/05/2024 14:00

@CranfordScones it's not Netflix that isn't supporting, it's the hardware, the fault lies with the TV. Digital platforms will always continually develop to improve (customer experience, security etc) digital development is rapid and necessary. It's why I won't buy a smart tv (again!)

SerendipityJane · 04/05/2024 14:08

Rule one of "smart" shit is never ever buy anything that can't replace it. Cars, TVs being the two poster children for this.

My TV is merely a screen to my smart stick. My cars display just shows my phones Android Auto screen.

Salespeople don't like me very much.

Returning to your problem - plug a Chromecast or Firestick in and lifes good again.
