To have driven to MILs in my dressing gown?

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 03/05/2024 22:00

I didn't even leave the car. I drove 10 minutes up the road to MILs house to deliver some Piriton to DD, she came out to meet me and grab it, and I drove 10 minutes home. I didn't want to change into a hoodie just for a quick drive (I had other clothes on, not JUST my dressing gown) DH said a dressing gown is "Not appropriate clothing for driving in" and that it was stupid because "It's all baggy" it's no baggier than a maxi dress or my favourite jump suit that has really flappy/baggy legs that I drive in a lot Confused

Was I unreasonable or he is just weird?

I wouldn't, but it's your choice.

Runnerinthenight · 03/05/2024 22:34

I've been known to pull on a pair of jeans or leggings under my nightie and pulling a hoodie over it!! I don't have a dressing gown.

Mumforadecade1 · 03/05/2024 22:36

I honestly don’t see the issue . I regularly drop my DD at the train station down the road in my pjs and a long coat. I find it odd that so many people wouldn’t step foot out the door in their pjs … I do draw the line at folk walking about the supermarket etc

Gazelda · 03/05/2024 22:44

I'd never go outside with my dressing gown on. The reason being that I only ever wear a dressing gown when I've just got out of bed or out of the shower, and am knickerless.

No way would I go outside without knickers. Ergo no going outside wearing a dressing gown.

To me this is different, it’s a long coat (designed for going outside )rather than a dressing gown so I would say this fine and something I may do.

Good job your DH doesn't live round here... we have families do their full weekly Tesco shop in their PJ and dressing gowns!

I've done the school run in my pj's before! Who cares I never got out do the car

CatamaranViper · 03/05/2024 22:53

Are we judging based on safety or being outside in pjs?

I assume OP can be the judge of whether her attire is safe to drive in considering she's an adult who can drive and has driven before.

Just being out in pjs, I walk the dog in my pjs every evening. He needs a 9pm wee and I like to be in PJ's as soon as I possibly can so most of my street has seen my pink and purple cheeky pj bottoms tucked into wellies or over flip flops.

No safety issues with pyjamas but I do see safety issues with a dressing gown and driving if it’s one with baggy sleeves

Yeah but again, I'm sure OP can judge if her dressing gown is safe for her to drive in or not. Hers may not be as baggy as yours.

Onelifeonly · 03/05/2024 22:57

I might leave my pyjamas on but I'd put a coat on over them. I always imagine what wouid happen if my car was involved in an accident or broke down and I had to walk home. Unlikely, I know, but I'd rather be properly dressed, outwardly anyway.

CatamaranViper · 03/05/2024 23:02

Would people seriously judge a neighbour if they saw them walking down the street in pjs at 10pm?

I wouldn't give a flying shit! So long as they're not in Tesco!

mrsfollowill · 03/05/2024 23:08

I knew someone who dropped his wife off at work early on a Sunday am. He was wearing a v short towelling robe and nothing else. He got a puncture on the way home- very awkward and wrecked a wheel on his car. This is why I always wear clothes out of the house even if its just leggings and a hoodie whatever the time of day.

elevens24 · 03/05/2024 23:42

I drive my dd to the train station every morning at 7.20am in my dressing gown. It's 8 minutes there and back. I couldn't care less. Hardly a big deal and as I'm not getting out of the car nobody would know whether I was wearing a cardigan or dressing gown. Even my image conscious teen doesn't care!

Yes.

KnickerlessParsons · 04/05/2024 00:01

a) slovenly
b) dressing gowns are indoors only
c) what if you'd broken down?

Groovy48592747 · 04/05/2024 00:58

YANBU driving in a dressing gown. However I always think what if you broke down, got a flat tyre, had a bump etc. Not the best attire to be wearing.

Mmhmmn · 04/05/2024 01:09

No, things can happen even (especially) on short trips. Car battery goes, flat tyre etc. You don’t want to be stuck outside anywhere in your dressing gown.

Mmhmmn · 04/05/2024 01:10

JosiePosey · 03/05/2024 23:47

Yes.

Yep. Basic.

nzborn · 04/05/2024 01:23

I used to drive into town too pick my son up after a night out, I loved it as it was great conversation when he was drunk,I jumped out of bed in my jammies and driver off,I got stopped my the cops for breath test and he pointed out I was in my jammies I said unless you want me to assume the position were fine.

MonsteraMama · 04/05/2024 01:33

I mean technically speaking wearing a maxi dress and driving can get you fined. I don't know anyone it's actually happened to but it is one of the "no" clothing items listed in the highway code, so if you're comparing your dressing gown to a maxi dress then purely from a safety standpoint your husband is right.

In terms of what's "decent" who actually gives a shit if you're not getting out the car?

FlissyPaps · 04/05/2024 01:33

YANBU OP. Perfectly fine. I’ve driven in my dressing gown to McDonald’s drive through plenty of times. Don’t give a shit what other people think. And if I ever break down, I’d simply take it off and reveal the normal clothes/tracksuit that’s underneath.

Wtf 😂

Kinneddar · 04/05/2024 01:35

I have seen my neighbour, more than once, take the bins in wearing pyjamas. Can confirm I didn't faint in horror or give it a second thought

Big difference between popping out to take bins in and going out in your car somewhere

FirstFallopians · 04/05/2024 02:21

This place never fails to shock me when it comes to what other people will choose to judge someone over.
