To take DD to the doctor for this rash

JoeCrackers · 02/05/2024 22:10

DD 11 has had this rash for a couple of weeks now, it’s seems to come and go. She just woke up with it one morning. It had faded but she was in the sun today, not roasting or anything, we’re in Scotland and it come back with a vengeance

I took her to the chemist a week or so ago and she reckoned slapped cheek. It started on her arms then a few days later her face but that’s gone now and it’s on her arms and legs. It wasn’t itchy initially but is now

any ideas what it might be? And of it is slapped cheek how long it might last? Haven’t changed anything that might cause an allergic reaction

Looks a bit like hives to me

RonObvious · 02/05/2024 22:16

When my daughter had slapped cheek, the rash kept coming back whenever she got hot - so in the bath, or when she had been in the sun. Can’t remember how long for, but it was a couple of week or so.

Kit456 · 02/05/2024 22:18

My daughter has allergy and looks like this when she has a reaction, the doc called it a blanching rash, basically hives.

Kit456 · 02/05/2024 22:19

To add, DD itches like crazy with it. If she takes anti histamine it's gone after 20 mins and it leaves behind red spots but the blistering goes down. Looks painful.

Looks just like the rash 3 of my kids and I have had with slapped cheek. We have all had it flare up and itch sometimes for about 3 weeks now. It comes back if we are hot, exercising, or have had a warm shower. Piriton has been very helpful especially when it was worse at night and disturbing sleep. My GP and obstetrician say it has been epidemic in the area recently.

JoeCrackers · 03/05/2024 07:38

@VeryBusyDoingNothing I kind of discounted hives as I know first had how itchy they are and it’s not. It’s also not raised at all, her skin doesn’t feel any different

@RonObvious @CancelledCheque I do think slapped cheek it definitely seems to get worse when she is hot. Did your GP say how long it would last? She is really upset that’s she’s going to have it all the time now as the weather gets warmer. Would love to be able to reassure her it will go completely

I'd book a doctors appointment and see a pharmacist in the meantime if there's a wait

CancelledCheque · 03/05/2024 08:07

The GP didn’t say how long the rash could last and the NHS website is vague: “The rash usually fades within 1 to 3 weeks, but it can sometimes last for longer, especially if you're hot or stressed.“ I will say that the rash has improved over time and we are using a lot less piriton after 3 weeks than we were at 1 week!

JoeCrackers · 03/05/2024 11:24

@CancelledCheque thats good it’s getting better. It was faded but cos she was out in the sun yesterday and it got worse again. We got to Turkey in 7 weeks just hope it’s gone by then

My daughter got a rash like this from’sunlight’ shd is actually allergic to it- she still get hives in her chest and arms but as she’s got older it happens less often. We gave her piriton but as it didn’t itch or bother her at all -it was just unsightly-we just left it alone. We still made sure she wears suncream I’ve got though.I’m not saying it’s the same but it does look like hives.

JoeCrackers · 03/05/2024 14:51

@Mollymalone123 oh god that sounds horrible your poor DD. The sunlights seems to be making it worse although when it came out the weather wasn’t sunny.
in the photos I’ve put it looks like it’s raised off her skin but it actually isn’t, it doesn’t feel any different to the rest of her skin.

Yes my dd’s was a flat rash-more like skin discolours.Trouble is if it’s allergy it is a quest of tracking the source down.My dd also comes out in hives when she is stressed or upset or has a temperature .hope you get to bottom of it.if u can do an econsult online with your gp and send the photos for them to look at?

JoeCrackers · 03/05/2024 18:40

Yes I’m definitely going to contact the GP on Monday. She’s really starting to get upset about it. It’s weird the way it’s coming and going

It looks the same as my son's and I think his is from the Slapped Cheek virus. I've read up on it and it can come and go and can last for a few weeks. That isn't helpful for your daughter but she is over the contagious stage. My son is only 5 so isn't bothered luckily. If you do go to the Doctors please can you update

JoeCrackers · 05/05/2024 14:40

@YourSpryWriter it doesn’t seem to be as bad now. I haven’t actually seen her yet today as she was away to a sleepover last night. If it comes back I’ll take her up and let you know.
it’s not been sunny here the last few days so but it’s to be quite warm later in the week so will be interesting to see that brings it back.

ill update here if any changes

Hi @JoeCrackers i know this post is a few months old so I hope your DD has fully recovered! Just wondering if you ever found out what it was or if you got the slapped cheek confirmed? My DD has a rash on her arms that looks exactly the same, completely flat but hot to the touch (no other symptoms). It’s now spread to her cheeks and legs and everytime I think it’s starting to go, it comes back! we went to the GP and typically as if by magic it had totally faded by the time we got there but a few hours later and theit’s back again!

Exasperateddonut · 21/07/2024 23:32

My kiddo has had exactly this as well. Pharmacist not bothered by it and said they’d seen ‘tonnes’ of kids with it recently. Also my cousin is a teacher at the other end of the country and said she’s seen quite a few kids in her school with very similar. It was thought to be slapped cheek.

JoeCrackers · 22/07/2024 08:06

@St3ph83 it just gradually went away after last time I posted. Just got fainter and fainter then disappeared. Never had it actually confirmed by the doctor but the pharmacist was pretty sure it was slapped cheek

Thank you @Exasperateddonut and @JoeCrackers this is so reassuring! It’s the fact it keeps fading and then coming back - we get our hopes up that it’s on its way out then next thing you know it back 😫

Exasperateddonut · 22/07/2024 12:59

Oh they keep looking proper plagued 😅
