To not let my toddler in the garden?

We get mushrooms popping up every so often. They came back again last week. I’m so worried about my 18 month old going near them! Would they cause harm? The garden is quite big so would be hard to keep track of what they’re doing unless I’m right next to them, couldn’t turn my back to hang washing etc. Do you agree they’re dangerous?

I would only let him out if you're supervising closely, not do other chores or go on your phone

We've had weird mushrooms growing in odd places in our garden too. Do you mean you won't let your toddler in the garden at all? It's not a problem if you're supervising them, and you shouldn't be leaving a toddler unsupervised in the garden even if there are no suspicious mushrooms.

Understand your concerns but seems a real shame to not to let him out there at all, especially in such lovely weather!
Why can't you go out there and spend time with him following him or playing together for abit :-/ Children need as much outdoor time as possible!
Maybe also Google the mushrooms to try and find out if they are harmful.
There is an app you can use to identify them but I'm not sure if you have to pay.

Sorry, re read your post, I'm tired! I think you could set them up with a toy in an area you've carefully searched for mushrooms and have half an eye on them while hanging the washing out. It might be worth trying to identify the mushrooms. You can download an app that will identify them from a photo.

Can't you just check for and then remove the mushrooms? Just like any other hazard in the garden?

TeaKitten · 02/05/2024 22:13

Depends what type of mushrooms they are. You’d surely be supervising the toddler anyway though so I’m sure they’d be fine.

Apollo365 · 02/05/2024 22:14

I always worry about this. Can you cut the grass on the lowest setting?

KreedKafer · 02/05/2024 22:25

Your toddler is no more likely to be poisoned by a mushroom than they are by anything else in the garden. Most lawn mushrooms are harmless. Presumably you wouldn’t keep your child away from a garden that has shrubs and flowers, and plenty of those are poisonous.

Librarybooker · 02/05/2024 22:27

Any toddler will need fully supervising in a garden. You can also pop out for 5 mins while they are napping or sitting (but not eating) in high chair to de-mushroom the garden before you out there

BlueMum16 · 02/05/2024 22:27

Pick the mushrooms and put in the bin and then allow the toddler out. You need to teach them not to eat stuff outside. There are many poisonous plants and flowers etc so needs supervision to learn for a while.yet.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/05/2024 22:45

Pick mushrooms and dispose but also check what they are via apps that do this

It's good to be outside and if rest kd garden safe then let him go our alone and play with toys /sandpit etx

Had my grandson today and he found mushrooms growing in a pot. He saw them before me. So quick. He threw it on the floor and I checked his mouth but because I’m his grandmother I’m over cautious and was worried so I phoned 111 and his parents had to take him to the hospital just in case he ate one. I’m 99% sure he didn’t because I never take my eyes off him but he’s so quick. I feel totally responsible now that they’re at the hospital with him for observation for the next four hours! The garden is his heaven but I don’t think it’s worth the worry so I think playtime will be indoors, play centres, swimming pool and public parks where hopefully there are no poisonous plants in pots! One worried grandmother.

Just throw the mushroom pot away
