Another neighbours and hot tub one

I would love anyone's input here. AIBU to be really upset over my neighbour's new inflatable hot tub? For context, we are a family of four in a family neighbourhood. We do make some noise but just the usual family stuff. Sometimes music practice, singing etc can be heard from the garden but we mostly shut windows etc. Our children play in the garden too, but never late and not excessively.
Basically, we're really sensitive to our neighbour's noise dislikes as they live alone and have said they don't like the sound of children.
However, they have recently acquired a hot tub and it is driving me insane. We don't have big gardens. Ours is around 7m across and theirs 3.5m across. This means the tub cannot be positioned more than 0.5m from our boundary fence. It's on all the time, 24/7 with a hum that's impossible to tune out. We can also hear it from bathroom, kitchen and two back bedrooms if the windows are open.
We told neighbour this and at first they were fairly amenable, building a soundproof box to encase the pump. But it's barely made any difference and we're bathed in the sound as soon as we step outside. Neighbour has said it's just like a fridge and that we should get used to it as they've had to get used to our children. Literally, as in you have laughing, babbling, crying children, I have a hot tub, c'est la vie. Which has made me feel really sad because comparing children to a hot tub is just mean?!
Plus, our children are not outside all the time.. older one no more than an hour or so during the week, little one maybe more but always supervised and rushed indoors as soon as they make a grumpy sound (but apparently even joyful sounds have to be 'tolerated').
We haven't asked for the tub to be removed, just to be able to aid in building an improved sound dampener, with an expert if necessary. We are being friendly but honest in sharing how we feel because it's literally ruining our outside space. It's much louder than a fridge.. more like a substation. Our youngest says 'zzzzzz', making the sound of it when we go outdoors.
We don't want to fall out with neighbour any more than this and moving from this otherwise lovely neighbourhood seems rash and expensive.
What would you do??

Big deal over nothing. You make noises, they make noises, that's life.

Caffeineislife · 02/05/2024 22:07

One of the very few silver linings of the energy price rises is the retirement of hot tubs and garden "bars" with those patio heaters. As a PP has said, I imagine they will get a lovely water and energy bill and the hot tub will suddenly enter retirement.

I'd just live your life, let the kids play and don't rush to get them in as much.

The evil side of me says, get one of those lovely squeaky trampolines and let the kids have hours of fun on it. Bonus points if it's near the fence and the kids are a bit nosey and chatty when they are in the hot tub.

Get a trampoline for you all to use and have noisy fun on..
Neighbours will get used to it. 😉

This, or a bouncy castle, and keep it up all the time.

LizzieBennett73 · 02/05/2024 22:13

I've got very sensitive hearing and this would be my worst nightmare.

Rollercoaster1920 · 02/05/2024 22:17

Inflatable you say? Try putting out lots of food for birds and foxes. Maybe one of them will puncture it.

PandaChopChop · 02/05/2024 22:18

I'd stop worrying about the kids making noise and just get on with it. The hot tub will soon get switched off when they notice the energy bill! Ours was costing £30 a day! (I didn't have it long 😆)

Aquamarine1029 · 02/05/2024 22:24

It would be an awful shame if you were to take a stumble by the fence and the long, sharp stick you just happened to be carrying went through the slats into the side of their hot tub. A terrible, terrible shame.

averythinline · 02/05/2024 22:58

Second the trampoline... maybe some wind chimes...

You shouldn't be calling your kids back in from the garden anyway...
A swing?

I wouldn't try and out noise them with radios etc as that way madness lies ..but does your musical kid fancy opera training or musical theatre for the younger one..

Use your space as you want to they are ...

In the bedrooms affected maybe some white noise to help with the buzz... They'll probably stop using it as much after the novelty wears off as it doesn't sound like they are likely to improve the sound proofing

Kelly51 · 02/05/2024 23:01

Your music practise, singing & children playing, while lovely for you has probably been driving them nuts
agree with this, hot tubs are not a loud hum at all, you sound like you've fixated on it.

You rush your kids inside the second they make a grumpy sound? That’s being a bit dramatic.

We have a hot tub, hard sided one not inflatable. The filters run through for 10 minutes at about 9:30am and then at 6pm,
other than that I can be sat 3 metres away from it in the garden and can’t hear a thing. Unless I’m in it with the jets on, but it’s near the back end of the very long gardens, next door have never said anything about it disturbing them. And they have come round to complain about things before (usually parking! So they wouldn’t think twice about coming to tell us we are ruining their lives with such a racket 😂)

i also have 3dc (although 2 are now adults), next door have 2 ‘very loud’ teens. Are they very loud? Probably not. But it’s noise coming from elsewhere therefore to me it’s annoying. Tough shit, we live in a semi in a residential area. We have neighbours. We all make noise.

Your neighbours aren’t comparing your dc to a hot tub, stop being precious. They’re saying your dc are as annoying to them as their hot tub is to you. You either live with it or move somewhere detached.

Gettingbysomehow · 02/05/2024 23:08

Yes, its a bit like the barbecue bastards opposite, stinking barbeque and burnt meat until 1 in the morning, raucous laughter about nothing funny non stop from his horrible sisters and fag smoke in spades.
Let your kids run wild, get them a trampoline right next to the fence. I'd even borrow kids if this was me.

ButterCrackers · 02/05/2024 23:13

If you have a paved area or could put down some slabs a basketball training area could be an idea. Seriously though the cost of running the hot tub will soon be noticed and it will be gone.

NonPlayerCharacter · 02/05/2024 23:18

I'm not an expert but I believe there are laws around this and the council has powers to enforce them...contact the local authority.

R41nb0wR0se · 02/05/2024 23:23

I'd be opening windows during music practice (especially if it's beginner violin or french horn!)

EatMoreFibre · 02/05/2024 23:29

The people two doors down have a hot tub in the garden. They only have it on on nice days, but then it's on for hours at a time. The noise is unbelievable, impossible to ignore so I understand OP.

Irishmama100 · 02/05/2024 23:35

This will be a passing phase! An inflatable hot tub will be so expensive on electric to run. The pumps on a proper hut tub only come on once a day for 30 min when not in use. We can have snow on top of our hot tub it is that well insulated. But I know that noise you are talking about. I would hate that constantly We are rural so no close neighbours. Let your kids play and make noise, but this will def pass as no way they will keep up paying for water to be kept constantly hot and pumped in that.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 02/05/2024 23:46

You should totally get a wind chime!

Yeah I think this is good advice.. also crikey £30 a day!! Holy shit 😄🙀

LEWWW · 03/05/2024 00:31

Let your children play outside, instead of limiting them, children make noise, hot tubs make noise and that’s part of living close together, I’m sure she will get bored of listening to your kids playing while she’s using it 😂

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 03/05/2024 00:37

Stop pandering to them about noise, don't do anything deliberate but also stop being so careful.

You can play low music to disguise the noise. Also a water feature masks continuous noises.

Seeleyboo · 03/05/2024 00:40

Oh god, this happened to me. Bloody thing drove me insane with its humming
When they decided to get a solid one, I almost cried, but that one is silent. She, however, isn't. Alexa alexa alexa. Ergh.

TruthorDie · 03/05/2024 00:47

waitingforthedrain · 02/05/2024 21:31

Suck it up. They'll get bored eventually, or panic when they get their first electricity bill. Either way, I don't see this as a permanent problem

This is my immediate instinct

StandingOvulation · 03/05/2024 00:48

Mice love peanut butter.

Just sayin

BoxOfCats · 03/05/2024 01:45

I would rather hear a hot tub than children. Probably one reason I don't have kids!
