To think this may need a rewire

I know nobody can really know until an electrician tests it but as a general idea would you think if an electric meter looked like this then a rewire would be on the cards?

Nah. Unless there's something dangerous that I can't see, then all that needs doing is putting some proper retention on a few of the wires. Doesn't have to be a work of art to be functional and safe.

Hi
I’d get it checked out by an electrician. The fuse board is antiquated. In my opinion, and I’m not an electrician , it needs an up to date Consumer board. It probably is safe but would be safer with upgrade.

Heavenssakes · 02/05/2024 21:54

My hunch woud be yes, rewire.

But, why ask us randomers?
The question best be aimed at someone who knows what they're talking about.

Is it a house you've viewed?

The meter is OK, the supplier will replace it when necessary. An up to current regulations consumer unit would be a good idea if you can afford it. I did this a couple of years ago, the old one looked similar to your picture.

Hmm following as mine is similar to this

Walkden · 05/05/2024 14:15

Let oks like a wylex consumer unit so no RCD protection. However regulations when it was installed apply so a change isn't mandatory but a new consumer unit would be a significant safety upgrade.

Whether it needs a rewire depends on state of the wiring though. Is there an earth on the lighting circuit for example?

Messy looking to the non expert eye isn't automatically a problem and if the devices were compliant when installed they won't need upgrading unless you need to upgrade for other purposes.

Wait for the electrical checks and see what they recommend as necessary, useful or "would be nice".

Can I check if the lighting circuit is earthed myself or do I need an electrician?

Walkden · 05/05/2024 14:25

Well if you have ever hanged I e of lamps is there an earth wire connected? It may not be an issue as long as all lamps do not require an earth .i.e no metal body etc.

You won't be be able to tell th state of the wiring properly without impedance/ insulation testing by a specialist testing instrument which only an electrician will have.

Tiamaria86 · 05/05/2024 16:28

We have an electrician coming to look at a property we're thinking of buying to check if a rewire is required and the fuse box looks a bit like that. So we will see what he says

Tiamaria86 · 24/05/2024 18:18

Hi OP did you find out about the electrics?
