To leave UK due to weather and cost of living

Blossompink · 02/05/2024 20:04

We are absolutely fed up of this constant cold, wet and dreary weather and are seriously thinking it's time to leave the UK. It's not just the weather which is making us miserable but also the cost of living is just ridiculous simply trying to keep the house warm and do simple tasks like drying clothes outside.

We are late 50's, no mortgage, have some savings, but would probably need to have an holiday let type set up to bring some money in or a small business.

AIBU to have had enough of life in the UK and want to move elsewhere?

Not to mention the healthcare. Our private hospital in Greece was third world. I could have died. People have to think very carefully if they are older.

it’s really hit and miss and especially so if you’re out of the big cities yeah. i’ve been really lucky to have only experienced the good (immediate treatment for something i would have been on a 3 year waiting list for in the uk) and I know elderly people here who make it work but I would certainly caution people to do their research before retiring here with any health concerns requiring regular hospital visits, in terms of distance from
hospital, and major differences from the uk (eg - no patient care provided by nurses beyond immediate medical needs, need for family to come for food, washing, etc)

I hope you are feeling much better now

Highly recommend ! Still learning Spanish, 6 years in, tho....it is a very international community. And I get by with lots of encouraging smiles - cab drivers etc are so sweet and constantly applaud my efforts. Colombians are fantastic people, very welcoming - very loud 😂
(I am in a city, not a pueblo however).
My rent for a 4th floor studio apartment is equivalent to £200, incl gas and water. COL has gone up as everywhere else but still very cheap if you have pounds euros or dollars...and I can live on my pension. No way could I do that in London. Brexit killed any desire I might have had to live out my days in UK. It is currently pissing down with rain however - because it is the rainy season !

So many people just do not understand this, bizarrely.

I agree but a lot of people who voted leave probably wouldn’t give a shit about free movement anyway 😞

Saying that a relative of mine voted leave and has had a big fancy second home in Spain for years. I just never understood his thinking. He wants the best of both ‘worlds’. Freedom to come and go in and out of Europe (no thoughts for future generations though) as he pleases but also ‘sovereignty’ and a blue passport innit 😛

BMW6 · 03/05/2024 22:56

I voted Leave in the Brexit vote.

I don't give a damn about Free Movement being ended. In fact it's one of the reasons I voted to leave the EU.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/05/2024 23:10

Aww, that’s nice for you @BMW6

Hopefully this Little Englander view will die out and be replaced by our far more internationally minded and modern younger generation.

You really want to live on an island and not be able to leave? Do you have kids?

@betsisherman Once you're over that 'tourist' euphoria and the power trip you get from the bravery of your decision, reality hits. Then comes home sickness and maybe even regret.

This is very, very true and most eloquently put. I've certainly been there. BUT I would add that when you are priced out of the UK and thus have absolutely no Plan B, you simply have to make it work. The early years are the worst in terms of finding your feet financially and professionally, and getting over bureaucratic hurdles. The only way is up, as we used to say in '97.

I’ve known a couple for whom it worked well for maybe ten years (Spain). But then, for various reasons, it didn’t.

It took them over two years to sell their Spanish house - only for about what they’d paid for it - and since they’d left the U.K. property prices had rocketed and they could no longer afford anything but a tiny flat in the area they’d left. Rather than the large house with big garden they’d had before.

If one of their parents hadn’t died at around the same time, and left them a small house, it would have meant either the tiny flat, or renting for ever more.

I know another couple who moved to Cyprus ‘for good’ but were back within 5 years because one of them became seriously ill.

Very wise IMO for anyone moving abroad to keep some sort of toe-hold in the U.K. property market - in case.

I think you will find there are tens of thousands of flights leaving 247 and British people especially have access and ability to reside in almost any country in the world!

We live in the U.K. of course we have to prioritise our well being over all else and not those that wish to come and go! The comfort and standards of living must be our number one priority not the convenience of those not even investing their lives here.

Polishedshoesalways · 04/05/2024 09:07

And yes I have kids - they are travelling in Australia and Asia ( and working) as we speak. The be and end all doesn’t finish on this continent, and quite frankly I find it very limiting of you to imagine that is all there is. There is a whole world out there beyond France fgs.

Riverlee · 04/05/2024 09:07

Maybe watch some if tv programmes ‘Bargain Bruts abroad’ or the one about people doing up chateaux’s and running them as businesses. One featured a cafe owner, and due to forest fires, they didn’t gave any trade for a week as no tourists came to their area.

Much better name for it in my opinion!!

Why can’t you leave? Sounds a bit extreme

50andshowingit · 04/05/2024 09:17

EasternStandard i left. Pre Brexit.

OldWiseNowTwiceTheSize · 04/05/2024 09:21

IIRC you can retire to Portugal but you need quite a hefty stash of cash - they don’t want incomers being a drain on them.*

I knew a few people who moved to Portugal and Spain in the past (pre Brexit) but they continued to put a drain on the NHS. I wonder if they need to pay for healthcare over there now? Lol not seen them back in the UK lately!

Good to hear but I think you’ll find people are leaving and arriving every day.

AdoraBell · 04/05/2024 09:27

YANBU to want to leave, but you really need to make a plan. We did it and it’s not as easy as just going for a holiday.

So you seem to believe the U.K. closed its air spaces, ceased all travel in and out as you left 😂😂
Christ.
Here are the actual statistics based on fact, as you seem to be struggling to comprehend a world in which everything has simply carried on pretty much unchanged!

Over 600,000 seem to have ‘escaped’ somehow in the last 12 months 😂

Op I will say this as someone who has lived in many countries.

You can not replace the love, security and support of your adult children, extended families, friends and communities all around you.

When the shit hits the fan there is nothing more comforting than home. The NHS for all its faults is world leading in terms of medical breakthroughs, developing medicines and vaccines. We are a decent, reliable and trustworthy nation from which you can explore the world if you wish. You have forgotten how precious it is to live your life safely without fear of corruption.

Wherher it is beautiful, sunny summer days like today with fields of buttercups and butterflies. Or snowy days in mid winter, the misty gloom and comforting fires of autumn - it is Home. Home can’t be replaced or replicated.

I hope you are enjoying the sunshine today and marvelling at the stunning colours of spring - with picnics, bbqs and beach days all ahead to look forward to and how lovely to have a family to share it all with.

I thought it was pro Brexit voters who are allegedly Stupid?

I voted in part to end Free Movement. Not No Movement

You do understand the difference don't you? 🙄

50andshowingit · 04/05/2024 11:19

It's a fact that's it's exponentially more difficult to live and work abroad after brexit. Some people will not be able to leave the uk given the financial immigration restrictions now in place. Not everyone will have a provable income. I'm far from stupid and throwing around comments such as yours shows you are unable to have a conversation without being malicious.
