My DS (12) has had abdominal pain for 12 days.
Last week we spent two days at the hospital (didn't include an overnight stay, he wasn't admitted) being assessed for appendicitis as the pain moved from central to lower right side.
They concluded it wasn't that and it was glands in his tummy that were up as he was fighting something off. The pain then came back, all over his tummy rather than just right side and hasn't improved. The GP yesterday prescribed Buscopan to try and relax he whole bowel but that isn't helping (she said it would probably help quite quickly if it was going to and he had maximum dose yesterday).
Has anyone else had experiance of this? We are nearly at two weeks of pain, he's missed loads of school. He is always happy to go to school, I have asked him if there are any issues and he says there isn't so I do believe it is a physical pain rather than nervous/anxious tummy. They have ruled out a hernia, kidney/urine infection and constipation.
I don't know where to go from here really and now I am worrying it is something more sinister that the doctors haven't considered.

I can't remember what it's called but there is a condition that causes ongoing stomach pain in kids. Can come on after another illness. I don't think it's sinister but can take a bit to resolve unfortunately!

is he constipated?

marzipanlover81 · 02/05/2024 15:15

appetite? weight loss?

they didn’t do a stool sample?

I had this with my daughter, it was an ear infection would you believe, glands in tummy very swollen. I've heard of stomach migraine?

It's mesenteric adenitis! Aka swollen glands.

Esmereldapawpatrol · 02/05/2024 15:22

He isn't constipated, going regularly, they didn't do a stool sample.
His appetite is less but he's eating a bit, no noticeable weight loss.

He had blood tests last week and his white blood count wasn't elevated so didn't seem to have an infection. They have checked his ears and throat and all clear.

There’s been some posts on here recently, her child was diagnosed with this https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mesenteric-lymphadenitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20353799
sounds similar?

This is what they have said it is. But after nearly two weeks I would have expected that to have settled, or at least improved?

how serious is the pain level?
is he up and about?
good sign that no weight loss. no constipation and limited impact on appetite

Smartiepants79 · 02/05/2024 15:25

I don’t want to alarm you but the other ladies child was still unwell many weeks later.☹️

He says it is there but manageable when he's lying down. Moving around makes it worse. He has pretty much been led on the sofa, he's quite lethargic and not his usual self.

He had an ultrasound to rule out appendicitis. They couldn't actually find it but said the whole area didn't look inflamed so it was encouraging. If it was the lymph node thing would they see those enlarged on a scan?

Full recovery can take four weeks or more.

Thank you. I have had a read through the other thread as well. That wasn't what the doctors at the hospital or the GP said, both expected an improvement by this weekend so I will have to see how he goes.
