Trans 'women' want female roles but women are not allowed to play trans roles...

‘Just let us audition’: UK transgender actors appeal to be cast in non-trans roles

Kim Tatum, Mariah Louca and Reece Lyons combine to call for trans women to be put on an equal footing for cis roles

I found the article very thought provoking.

lifeturnsonadime · 02/05/2024 12:52

Well it's the logical conclusion if you believe that trans women are women.

Why shouldn't they play women's roles?

As I don't believe in that, it's just another way of men trying to steal our jobs.

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/05/2024 12:53

Most of the guardian is utter dross so YANBU at all.

Dotjones · 02/05/2024 12:54

YANBU to stop reading the Guardian, just as you wouldn't be unreasonable to stop reading the Mirror or the Daily Mail.

SpringKitten · 02/05/2024 12:54

I gave up on the Guardian a few years ago, there’s hardly anything in there that represents how I feel about women’s rights any more. I stopped my subscription.

Walkinginthesand · 02/05/2024 12:57

The Guardian's becoming more and more like a newspaper put together by students

I find your use of the derogatory word "cis" highly offensive.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 02/05/2024 12:58

I don’t see the problem. It’s not like they wrote ‘the guardian are starting a campaign to make directors give women’s roles to trans’. It’s just a lifestyle/showbiz article talking about trans actors.

I think you’re looking to be offended.

Stopped reading the Mail Online over a decade ago and have never read The Mirror... not sure where to go for actual news anymore!

Agreed. The guardian's reporting the news. The actors are making their own case as they would. You don't have to agree with everything that's reported but I find it interesting to know about what's going on which is why I read newspapers.

I didn't use 'cis'.... I was quoting the Guardian article.
I also find 'cis' offensive. Sorry if that was not clear.

afternoonoflife · 02/05/2024 13:01

It’s disappointing to see no transmen interviewed. It would have been interesting to see if they have similar experiences.

However, the push at the moment seems to be that only gay actors can play gay roles. I don’t personally agree with that but if you’re going to follow that logic then you could say only trans should play trans and only “cis” should play “cis”.

I think @CactusMactus was quoting the article, although I haven't read it so I can't be sure.

Edit: crossed posts

AliceKyteler · 02/05/2024 13:02

Haven't touched it in years now, when I was younger I used to love buying it.
Wouldn't let it over my threshold now.
That slimeball Owen Jones still writes for it doesn't he?
Yes of course trans activists want it both ways re acting roles, because it's all about their entitlement to more things and less for others (women)

Alltheunreadbooks · 02/05/2024 13:03

It's just a news article.

You can give up on the Guardian if you like though, if you don't like what they report on.

BonnyBo · 02/05/2024 13:04

I’ve had the scales fall from my eyes about the bias in the guardian. Because until the attack on women’s rights and their lack of acknowledgement of this, all their biases lined up with mine so even though I knew each paper had its agenda, I didn’t really notice it.

Now, I like to look at lots of different sources of information regardless of whether they espouse my general world view or not, and that includes the guardian (although I feel more betrayed by them because I thought progressive would mean not shitting on women) so for that reason I think YABU.

It was perfectly clear. You have used quotation marks to make it clear

Underthinker · 02/05/2024 13:08

From the article...
“I have never seen a trans woman on stage play a mother or a love interest,” Offie-award-winning Lyons says. “Why don’t we come to mind for that?”

But how does he know he hasn't seen a TW play these roles? Aren't we always told that TW are indistinguishable from woman? How does he know that all the top Broadway and Hollywood actresses aren't all male?

I've occasionally seen that word "cis" in other articles. I have no idea what it means or what it refers to, it just seems to have been adopted into our language with no explanation. I'm still not sure what "woke" means either, nor whether it's deemed to be a good thing or a bad thing!
I realise I'm a bit out of touch!

EasternStandard · 02/05/2024 13:11

Yanbu generally

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 02/05/2024 13:17

I tend to give anything associated with Owen Jones a wide berth.

It's not a news piece though. It's an opinion piece that sets out the writer's point of view. And it just so happens that most of the writers at the Guardian have similar opinions on gender issues (because they bullied the others out).

Ofcourseshecan · 02/05/2024 14:34

To help bring about more opportunities and greater equality for trans women, Louca believes there should be quotas in place. “If there’s 20 people auditioning, audition two or three trans people,” she suggests.

Yes, because absolutely women have too many opportunities and should give some up to men. ☹️

Also, audiences can see as well as anyone else if the person playing eg someone’s mother is male or female.
