fly tomorrow, totally forgot about the liquids thing and I have no clear bottles! Anyone know where I can buy them today?

also what on earth do you do about makeup? Can’t imagine squeezing foundation into a bloody bottle!

I put foundation in one of the ziploc bags, have never been stopped.

Besides, more and more airports are doing away with the whole liquids rule. Check which airport you're flying from and to and see what their individual policy is before you get your knickers in a twist.

OpusGiemuJavlo · 02/05/2024 10:46

The individual toiletries do not need to be in clear containers, but must be in containers of size max 100ml (it is not acceptable to just have 100ml of liquid in a container that could hold 200ml). foundation etc is normally in small enough containers to not need decanting. The normal bottles they come in from the store are fine so long as it's not more than 100ml.

The only thing that needs to be clear is the bag that these items are in, and that bag must not exceed 20cm x 20cm.

You can put larger containers of toiletries in your hold baggage, it's only carry-on stuff that is restricted.

Well I've never had my freezer bag rejected and have never used a bag vending machine

As long as the bag is clear and compliant in size, they should not reject them.

OP, remember larger bottles ca be bought once airside. But not brought back in hand luggage.

Flew out of Stansted the other week and got into the trial queue where you didn't have to do anything with your bag.

You can't guarantee you'll end up in that queue though

You can take empty, any size bottles as well, I'd always thought maximum container size was 100ml but now you can take water bottles etc just as long as they're empty. Which totally defeats the 100ml liquid rule anyway

I dont decant anything, just take bottles less than 100ml in a clear bag. make sure the bag is the right size though, I had to take everything out and out it in a smaller clear bag at manchester last year even though the bag wasnt full.

The rule is a 1 liter zip lock bag.

takealettermsjones · 02/05/2024 11:28

You're better not decanting because the bottle must state that it holds no more than 100ml. A lot of the small toiletry bottles you can buy don't have their capacity printed/stamped on the bottle, so the airline can reject them. Just buy miniatures.

Also, you're not allowed more than 1 litre of liquids per person, even if everything fits in the bag.

They don't need to be clear, just must be under 100ml and all of them fit into a clear plastic bag eg the I litre ziplock bags though 3 airports in U.K. are now fully modernised equipment wise and don't require it (check to see) Bristol i happen to know has some modern scanners as Dp didn't have to separate his liquids last week. I take just a few bits of make up in the aforementioned bag

It is wrong to say any empty container defeats the 100 ml liquid rule. The 100 ml liquid rule came about as a result of a plan to mix larger quantities of liquids to form explosives and narrowly averted what would have been the biggest disaster in aviation history. Potentially much worse than the twin towers.

There is no threat from an empty 1.5 litre bottle. The issue is the liquid within, not the container.

Lovend · 02/05/2024 12:29

you can also buy liquids that you might need (eg sunscreen, shampoo etc) when through security but of course you won’t be able to bring them back.

CookStrait · 02/05/2024 12:33

We got on our 2nd flight once going to SE Asia & everyone had their massive bags of make up taken away. I was shocked that people took so much make up on holiday, with the heat, eye rubbing, & of course the lovely tan that you get.

Soz went off on one there, I put my moisturizer & body cream in the little round pots, think I got them from Bodycare. Or I get samples for the occasion.

Having a mixing container for your 100ml of chemical A and 100ml of chemical B and 100ml of chemical C completely defeats the point of the original rule

But airports sell water bottles, bottles of coke, alcohol etc. it would be incredibly easy to buy something to take on the plane with you.

As has@Lovend has pointed out if so minded there’s plenty of opportunity for an individual to procure a potential mixing vessel once airside or even whilst on board….

It’s establishing the nature of the liquids being taken airside that’s important.

Watchwatchmymysteedsteedgogofarfar · 02/05/2024 13:15

They will sell them at the airport!

A container without contents is useless. 1.5 Litre bottles of water can be bought airside (and contents disposed of), beer is served in pint glasses. Spirits are sold in large bottles. Or a water proof duty free plastic bag for that matter. This rule was scientifically worked out.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 02/05/2024 13:17

You get one bag per person.

Ohnobackagain · 02/05/2024 16:06

@SoreFeets is your foundation over 100ml? Mine’s only 30ml. Even my bigger one only 75. Lots of travel bottles at Boots, Tesco, Amazon.

Jeezitneverends · 02/05/2024 17:26

Isn’t it ridiculous that having had this liquid ruling for the best part of 20 years, it still gets interpreted so many ways!

I Too have had the same same bag used to carry my bottles rejected and accepted at the same airport (looking at you Edinburgh) a few weeks apart

Maelil01 · 02/05/2024 18:07

You don’t need clear bottles! You just can’t have anything over 100ml. Doesn’t matter if the container isn’t see-through.

Ourshoddyhouse · 02/05/2024 21:35

If there's a Boots past check in, you can order online and do click & collect 🙂
