To feel sad about single mum jokes/memes on social media

I'm a single mum of two lovely DC. Their dad isn't on the scene but I think I do a pretty good job. They're both happy and we're a tight unit. Lately, I've had lots of hurtful single mum jokes/memes coming up on my FB. Mostly screenshots of men's Tinder bios etc where they are stating no single mums, the one I just read literally said something like if you were that great then he wouldn't of left you and the kids. The comments are littered with people finding it hilarious and praising the guy for his "brutal honesty". Any women commenting were shut down and "accused" of being a single mum herself. I'm maybe being oversensitive but I'm seeing more of this lately and I'm embarrassed to admit it is slighlt affecting my self esteem :( I would like to date eventually and it is really putting me off and thinking nobody would ever want me and I'm damaged goods or something. Think I'll just avoid social media tbh.

Sorry you've been made to feel so awful.

Social media is not a good view of reality. Your algorithm will also be showing you these posts more because you click on them, most well adjusted men won't be seeing and commenting on these posts.

Block.

Any man with those views just make me grateful for being a single mum.

Fuck those men - they sound like Incel types. Shouldn’t be allowed (is it inciting hate?).

Do not give them headspace please. Carry on being you which sounds like a mum doing their very best.

I’m a single mum, very active on social media and have never heard of or seen anything like this

PeonyAndBlushSuede · 02/05/2024 00:04

Men (or women) who find it a joke or look down on single mums are not worth you getting upset.

The internet is a cesspit full of uneducated lonely trolls who spend their time making fun or others and posting other types of sexist and racist nonsense.

Yep see it all the time on Facebook, there was a meme the other day making fun of how British women look (a pic of someone with heavy makeup and black thick eyebrows) and in the comments there was people saying "bet they are single mums too" single mum is used as an insult a lot so I'm surprised people are saying they haven't noticed it

You know full well how algorithms work, so why do you continue to actively seek out things on social media that make you feel bad?

I don't know what percentage of mothers identify as single mums, but I'm pretty sure it's not some small minority! Don't allow internet trolls and misogynists to get under your skin; their opinions are meaningless.

Social media will show you things it predicts you will click on - in this case the more you click on these posts the more they will get shown to you. I only get shown: memes about being a mum, DIY, making clothes - because this is what I click on and engage with.

Start hitting report/block on these posts every time you see one. Click on positive posts only - if you see something horrible either totally ignore it or block/report. It will eventually change so you don’t see this type of thing. If you see something try not to get outraged and click it - it’s how social media works to suck you in.
