Are there any dentists still up?
I had a tooth removed on Monday and it still really hurts. Not sure if I have Dry socket or an infection, or if it is normal.
Can post pic if anyone wants to look.
Thank you.

Well it will hurt there's a open wound in your head. It takes a little while.

I've never had it, but dry socket by all accounts is an all consuming pain. No eat, drink or sleep at all type of pain.

Somethingsnappy · 01/05/2024 22:53

As above, dry socket is horrendously painful, similar kind of pain to a tooth abscess. If this is what you are feeling, yes, go back to the dentist ASAP and it can be quickly sorted for you. It is a deep, throbbing excruciating pain. But if the pain feels manageable, as to be expected from a deep wound, more stingy and sensitive, but wouldn't keep you awake, then that sounds normal, and will get better quite quickly. Dry socket pain won't improve at all, unless treated, but simple pain from the extraction should feel better little by little, each day.

I had two wisdom teeth removed and it hurt for about a week. Then it got better. I did look into dry socket but understand it would reaaaaaally hurt for that

I’ve recently had a tooth removed and it took a solid week for the pain to subside. Keep on top of your painkillers and make sure you are rinsing with salt at least 4x a day with boiled cooled water - I’ve also had dry socket before and as others have said the pain is horrific. Good luck, tooth extraction is the worst.

iamsoshocked · 01/05/2024 23:02

thanks.
the pain runs from down the side of my throat up the side of my face/cheek bone and into my temple.
Is that normal?

Happy to be proven to being a wimp!

It's hard to tell from your pic whether it is healing ok or not. It looks like it might be dry socket.

The extraction site is painful for a while even without a problem. Having a tooth yanked out of bone is a brutal procedure.

Do you have a persistent peculiar taste in your mouth? That's a major symptom of dry socket. And yes the pain throbs throughout your entire face and is intolerable without pain killers.

You could go back to the dentist anyway. They can put anaesthetic gel on the site.

can u see a clot inside the cavity? If the clot is gone then it’s dry socket. Go back to the dentist and they may need to give u antibiotics - my dentist gave me a prescription for them just incase but thankfully I didn’t need to use it. X

I had two out recently. Did salt rinses plus corsodyl morning and night. Took painkillers for a week.

iamsoshocked · 01/05/2024 23:14

@Mumofaboyandaspringer
I don't think there is a clot. would it still be there after 48hours?

I've tried to be super careful.

yes, the clot should be there all the way up until your gum heals over - I only know this as I was so paranoid about getting dry socket again! You can do everything your supposed to do and just be unlucky. Get yourself back to the dentist asap and they will be able to sort you out. Don’t sit with the pain it just gets worse. X

Somethingsnappy · 02/05/2024 09:26

The pain you described in your last message doesn't sound entirely normal, no. Dry socket is definitely a possibility. My advice would be to go back to the dentist straightaway. It's horrendously painful, but they'll put a dressing in, and the pain will disappear immediately (in my experience).

mynameiscalypso · 02/05/2024 09:27

I'd go back. I had a tooth removed (maybe the same one based on the pic) and it was a bit tender for a day or so but no real pain.

iamsoshocked · 02/05/2024 15:50

I went back to the dentist today and they confirmed Dry Socket. 😪
They put some stuff on the socket which has helped and said I'd just been unlucky that the healing blood clot fell off.
Apart from feeling sorry for myself, I'm feel better knowing what's going on.

Yeah tissue looks a bit necrotic. Back to the dentist and ask for antibiotics (metronidazole if you can take it) and they will dress it.
In the mean time hot salt mouth rinse and keep something cool on outside.
If becomes very visibly swollen or tongue feels elevated in mouth go to a&e.

Blanketpolicy · 02/05/2024 16:22

I've had two teeth removed in the last 2 years. First one the dentist pulled the tooth and he didn't even look at it afterwards. It bled all night, was agony for days, I couldn't lie down as it increased the pressure and I spent most of a full night standing in tears, I called the next morning and was prescribed antibs without them even looking at it. The second extraction was a bit tender when the LA wore off, but paracetamol took the edge off that night and the next few days, while I knew it was there, I didn't even need painkillers.

The difference was the second dentist I told her about my previous experience and she took time to made sure it had stopped bleeding before I left and then packed it out with something. I wrote her a letter thanking her as it was amazing compared to the first experience.

If I ever need another extraction I will be insisting on the same instead of being rushed out the chair.

Hi OP
Good to see that you went back to your dentist and they have treated you
Not a wimp at all as these things hurt like heck and need to be treated

Get better soon.
