What do you think is not "Being a snob"

Having been/watched another thread on "The most snobbiest thing you have heard"

According to another thread I am being a snob to have napkins.

I am being a snob for having a builder that has installed portaloos on my drive.

It’s not snobby to have napkins.

Isn’t the point of portaloos that it means the builder can use the toilet without traipsing through the house or when you’re out? It’s very common, I see it all the time.

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/05/2024 22:38

I can't see a problem with having napkins. If you were looking down on people who didn't have napkins then that would be different.

A builders' portaloo seems perfectly sensible.

maddening · 01/05/2024 22:42

Being snobby is looking down on people- some people assume someone who is "posh" is snobby - being posh is not snobby - snobby can be seen in anyone looking down on someone else - also including inverse snobbery.

RunSlowTalkFast · 01/05/2024 22:44

I'm definitely a snob because 'most snobbiest' is making me cringe.

K0OLA1D · 01/05/2024 22:45

Having a preference to something isn't a snob, unless you judge someone else for their 'lesser' (IYO) preferences.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/05/2024 22:47

I was once called a snob because I challenged racism.

Eyesopenwideawake · 01/05/2024 22:48

Having your own standards/preferences isn't snobby. Judging other people for having different standards/preferences is.

Same.

There are people who think if you do anything different, you are working very hard to show them you're better than them, ie, a snob. It's really tedious and quite a horrible way to be, especially if people are just minding their own business and finding little bits of joy where they can.

I grew up with this attitude around me (rural working class village full of all sorts of great people but some real bores as well) One of the best things I ever did was I happily moved away so I could do innocuous things like have napkins.

5128gap · 02/05/2024 19:36

If you want to use napkins, unless you look down in people who don't, you're not a snob. If you want portlaloos on your drive for the convenience and comfort of your builders or to protect your carpet from their boots, you're not a snob. If you want them because you don't want nasty working class builders bums anywhere near your facilities, you may be heading in that direction. If i was your neighbour and objected to the sight of your portaloos as lowering the tone of the neighbourhood and making the place look like a truck stop, I would be a snob myself.

Trolleytoken · 02/05/2024 19:51

re portaloos, I asked my builder ( basically said they don’t need to get one and could just come in) and they said they prefer it as it reduces risk around their subcontractors if they don’t need to enter the house- not that they don’t trust them but if there are any accusations of theft or damage it gets awkward- best to just avoid it. Similarly they had their own kettle that they ran off the generator.

therealcookiemonster · 03/05/2024 00:37

I don't understand how having portaloos is snobbish
I had one when getting house revamped and will do so again if builders are in. I make sure to get a nice one which is cleaned and restocked regularly by the company so it ensures they always have access to clean facilities.

I think the issue is getting a portaloo when your own toilet is in full working order, purely because you don’t want a pleb sitting on your toilet seat. Getting an outside portaloo when your kitchen is being painted, for example, and making the painter go outside to use that instead of using the downstairs toilet.

If your own toilet is not usable (big extension, or bathroom being replaced etc) obviously that’s fair enough.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 03/05/2024 00:44

On that thread there were loads of comments saying people were snobby because they were better off and spent their money on things they liked, the people didn't go round saying that they were superior to others or that others were plebs etc, they simply spent money on things. That's not snobbery and the comments smacked of jealousy.

fair enough

although I can see how some might not want to share a bathroom with strangers?

I think if you apply that to all guests, that wouldn’t be snobbish. If you only apply it to tradesmen, it is.

That's really interesting & tbh now you've said it it does make sense & is sort of sad but yeah I don't blame them
