To hate unrealisic Vinted sellers?

Ok hate is a strong word but still

I am quite active on Vinted, with a toddler I am used to buying and selling a lot of items fairly frequently, I always price to sell, usually pitching items £1 or so less than the cheapest other listing of the same or similar item, I’ve never had an item listed for more than 48 hours.

Now DD is getting older and her size isn’t changing as much I’m now looking at nicer items to buy on the platform, and I’m just so surprised about how unrealistic some sellers are.

Example, I had a Ralph Lauren summer dress favourited for a while, it’s been listed for 17 months, I offered £3 less than asking and it’s been rejected. I am always tempted to message them asking if they understand the concept of an item only being worth what someone is willing to pay. Imagine having an item for sale for nearly a year and a half and not thinking to yourself ‘maybe it’s priced too high’

Then you have the people charging more than the item is even selling for new! And it’s not an antique or rare item, a pair of leggings etc.

I wish Vinted had a 'no offers' setting like Ebay does.

You can write it in the description, generally people will not send you offers or do they? I never do if it says no offers.

Starsandflowers · 01/05/2024 19:59

Well I don't mind it if people stick to their selling price.. but some people get ridiculous about it. I offered a fiver less for something quite highly priced once.. it had been up over a year... and the seller sent an arsey message back saying it was insulting as the item was worth so much more.
It did make me laugh... I mean just decline the offer if you don't want to accept it..no need to be a dick about it
And the item ie still listed and hasn't sold yet! Another 5 months later lmao
Some people don't get that things are only worth what people will pay for them.
There was a thread on mumsnet once where a woman was saying she would rather throw items in the bin than sell them for less than she thought they were worth.
Some people are nuts!
I sell on vinted and honestly I'm just glad to be rid of clutter and get a little something back for it... who cares if I paid a lot more when I bought it and am now selling it for a pound.. someone's got bargain and I got some space in my house.. win win!

Nanny0gg · 01/05/2024 20:09

I use Ebay rather than Vinted, but am curious .

Some items on Vinted are so screwed up and tatty looking in photos. Do people actually buy them?

Someone has said that on this thread too. That they've thrown things away rather than accept an offer that they don't want. It's a real shame. I get that some people would rather donate to charity, to avoid the faff of parcelling something up etc, if there's little financial gain... But to throw something in the bin, when there is a person who would be glad to have that item? No wonder our planet is in crisis with that attitude!

Tbf sometimes I just throw clothes in the bin if I cnba to list them. Charity shop is a good 35 minute walk away and I’m not waiting and saving up stuff to fill a whole bag as then I might as well list it for sale even if it was only for £2.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 01/05/2024 20:25

It does seem wrong to chuck perfect wearable clothes in the bin. I think I rarely throw any clothes away - old socks get reused to clean Venetian blinds and I use old (washed obv!) knickers to clean bathrooms. Pretty much anything else I'd normally throw away goes into a rag bag popped into a charity bag.

Selling however I value my time far too much to sell something for a £1

Deludamol · 01/05/2024 20:31

Yeah I get the impression some people would rather set things on fire than sell it for what someone is willing to pay.

I can understand if it's hardly worth anything, but if it's listed for £50 and someone will give you £45, and the other option is that it may never sell at all, why not take the £45?

And more to the point, why get offended that someone offered you £45?

StedeBonnet · 01/05/2024 20:32

I don't make offers as I find it annoying when people do, just buy it or not. I'm never desperate to sell it and I'm perfectly entitled not to accept an offer if I don't want to. Sometimes I do depending on whether it's made at a convenient time for me to post it out.

Supersimkin2 · 01/05/2024 20:34

I had a reseller get hysterically abusive cos a Brora cardi had a ‘hole’ where the seams joined- a gap between stitches.

Got it back, relisted it for double, five stars to me.

Screenshotted her messages, sent to
Vinted.

BirthdayRainbow · 01/05/2024 20:37

I've had some offers that were ridiculous but usually I ask if they will split the difference between what I'd like and what they want to pay. Mostly it works. Today I sold something so quickly I can't help wondering if I under priced but tbh they are really happy with their purchase and I've got a bit of extra money.

What frustrates me is people who favourite things but then don't buy.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 01/05/2024 20:41

And people who send an offer, you accept them you never hear from them again Confused

Moreorlessmentallystable · 01/05/2024 20:48

Dotjones · 01/05/2024 14:49

I've been there from the other direction, selling something below the going rate and getting people asking me for a few quid off. I don't bother because it's not a business to me. I don't care how much you want to pay, I'm already offering what I think is a more than fair deal. I've binned stuff before rather than sell it to someone who expects a discount.

Obviously if you're running it as a business your mindset can be different, especially if you want repeat customers. But to me, I'm flogging something I'd otherwise just throw in the dustbin because it's no longer of use to me.

So you'd rather get zero pounds instead of a few pounds? That makes no sense to me. If I am not using an item I take offer, even if it's a fiver or even £3 it's better than nothing AND at least I know my item is getting used and not going to landfill. I use recycled packaging and try and drop if I have trip to town as opposed to drive specifically for the purpose of dropping the item.

Heatherbell1978 · 01/05/2024 14:56

I price to sell so just ignore a lot of offers as I know I'll get full price. I posted a brand new pair of Nike trainers for £40 which were £80 new online (genuine and long story as to why we had them). Immediately inundated with offers ranging from £10 to £25 and then a few hours later sold them at full price. Two of the cheaper offers messaged me after to basically say 'oh that's not fair they've gone as I wanted them and would have paid £40'. Erm okBiscuit

That surely is not vinted right? No one can offer £10 on a £40 item

I think the favouriting thing is because people are browsing the listings and marking items to compare later. That's what I do, I'll search "Jojo jumper" and favourite anything I like the look of, then comb through my favourites list to pick which one to buy. Although I do always go back and unfavourite afterwards so the seller doesn't get their hopes up.

I wish you could turn off the notifications for people who favourite your item though, I don't want to receive notifications as a seller or send them as a buyer!

What do you think favourite is for? It's the equivalent of putting things in your Amazon basket for later or a wish list. I usually have 30 favourites at any given time.

I heard good things about Vinted, so downloaded the app. I will get rid, as can't be bothered with it. People are charging too much for secondhand clothes, I may as well add on another £10 and buy brand new. I prefer Ebay tbh Ive done well bidding on some good stuff

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 01/05/2024 21:07

I take offers on items that have been sitting there a while. Some people do completely over value their second hand goods, but it can take them a while to figure it out. I personally can't be bothered to sell things too cheaply, would rather take to charity or pass on to a friend.

Pin0cchio · 01/05/2024 21:10

If i own an item, and i am only willing to sell it if it raises enough money, thats my choice.

Its a bid on the part of sellers to maintain price levels by simply reducing supply at a lower price point.

They own the item & clearly do not need to sell it, the fact that you want it for less doesn't mean they should sell it.

Pin0cchio · 01/05/2024 21:15

Lots of people will throw rather than sell too low. It erodes price expectations if you allow people to get used to buying for less.

Luxury brands use to do this all the time - destroy stock rather than discount. It protects the value of your brand/other stock you are still holding to sell.

Clearly its not the best approach for the environment.

agree with this take, I’m not sure if I’m odd for thinking this but I’d never pay more than 50% of an items RRP if second hand.

Even in great condition, so it makes no sense when people try to sell for so close to retail esp when taking into account the fees and shipping costs

I recently purchased a Fatface dress in a style that always sells out really quickly. I bought it in 2 colours ways and 2 sizes. The dress sells out really quickly so was tempted to list on Vinted for a bit more than the price a) to make bit of a profit and b)if someone missed out they wouldn’t mind paying a few £s the original price.

Moglet4 · 01/05/2024 21:24

That’s why I price up 10%!

fashionqueen1183 · 01/05/2024 21:27

What I find weird is people who are selling new items with tags which I can only guess as to where they are getting them from - maybe they work for the retailer etc but anyway one woman has a load of m&d bras. But with postage they’d be more than just going in the shop or online?! They’re priced so high. And you can even see the original price on the tags
