To put my unwanted kitchen knives in an amnesty bin?

I genuinely don't know how to get rid of unwanted kitchen chopping knives. I don't think my local tip will take them.

I un/fortunately live in an area where we have just had these knife amnesty bins installed. It seems like a safe way to dispose of them but I don't want to skew the data, even a little bit.

Could put them in a bag with a note, then in the amnesty bin?

Unreasonable to use the amnesty bin for household knives?

I'd wrap in cardboard and put in your general waste bin tbh

GracefulGrandma · 30/04/2024 20:58

I think it’s ok to put them in there. Imagine if you put them elsewhere and a criminal got hold of them? Better safe than sorry.

ScottBakula · 30/04/2024 21:00

Yes of course its fine , I have done it with old kitchen knives and penknifes

WonderingWanda · 30/04/2024 21:01

Do you have a recycling centre? I put mine in the big metal bin there.

@PronounsBaby
That is such a good question! I have some knives to dispose of (clearing out an elderly relatives flat) and spent ages googling how to. I did look for an amnesty bin, but couldn't find any.
The best advice I could find was to wrap tightly in plastic and then tape up very thoroughly. Basically mumify your knife and then just throw in normal rubbish.

I certainly think a knife amnesty bin is a good idea. Better than just throwing away and falling into the wrong hands.

What? 😂
Juat put them in your normal bin like a normal person op. I promise you criminals tend to get their weapons from also doing normal things like buying them from shops. An amnesty bin is for getting weapons off streets

I agree with this. I don't think it matters where the knives are from it is just a safe way to dispose of what could be a dangerous item if the wrong person got hold of it.

I got rid of some old ones recently in the metal bin at the tip

Rocknrolla21 · 30/04/2024 21:05

Google says to wrap them up and dispose of in your general waste. Or the metal recycling at the tip. Or the scrap man may be interested

OneTC · 30/04/2024 21:07

Just put them in the bin/recycling or take them to the tip

This states you can dispose of them in the amnesty bins to keep unwanted knives and sharp objects that could be weaponized out of circulation.

Check what you can put in your rubbish on your council's website first. We can't put anything metal in our normal bins as our waste goes to an incinerator. So those suggesting wrapping and putting in your bin may not be correct for your area.

I also don't see what would be wrong with putting them in an amnesty bin as it's a safe way to dispose of them.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 30/04/2024 21:14

When I was clearing out a relative’s house I took their old knives to our tip and asked the staff where they should go. They went in the metal recycling skip.

What an interesting thread.
I would never have thought of using an amnesty bin for kitchen knives. Then it got me thinking that I've not heard anything about amnesty bins in the area I live in. So I googled and as far as I can tell we don't have an amnesty bin in my area. I'm in Scotland so is this a thing down in England and not up here?

PronounsBaby · 03/05/2024 16:05

Thanks all. Looking at local information I think I will pop them in an amnesty bin in a bag and note incase they can record them accurately.
