Hi everyone

Name changed but regular user.

DH rolled his ankle playing football on Saturday. Sunday woke up and it was black and blue and couldn't walk on it so went to A&E for xray. They told him it's "just" damaged ligaments and to rest it, ice it and take paracetamol.

He's keeping it elevated and iced but the swelling is getting worse and it's getting more and more painful.

Paracetamol isn't touching it, managed to borrow some crutches from a kind lady after asking on FB but he's really struggling.

Anyone with any experience? Should he go back? Or just keep resting?

What kind of holiday are you planning OP?

I couldn't bear weight on my ankle for a good while. Was in a wheelchair for a few days, then crutches for a couple of weeks and couldn't drive during that time either

Hopefully you can still go, but might have to be a bit sedentary

It’s hard for them to see fractures / breaks when that swollen

I also had a missed break in mine, so I would recommend going back and asking for it to be x-rayed again once the swelling has gone down a bit

Ligament damage hurts like hell though

I know four people in the last 18 months who have been told they have sprained their ankle/just got ligament damage and who all ended up with a break being diagnosed later on and surgery. So I would go back were I you.

I did my ligaments in October, I did go back after a few weeks to minor injuries for another xray because it wasn't getting better, but there was no break.
I was off work for 3 months (physical job) and had 10 weeks of physio. Its still not right.
I was told 6 months before it will heal.

I did the same and the NHS hospital told me to rice it and take painkillers. After a few days it was very swollen and bruised and I couldn’t walk on it so saw a specialist at Bupa who said it was major ligament damage and put me straight into a boot that I had to wear for 6 weeks, including in bed and in the shower! It is fine now but wouldn’t have been without the boot - go back.
