Injured bird?

My cat brought a bird in who is still alive, can’t tell how badly injured, my DD doesn’t want me to put him outside to fend for himself so is currently in a shoe box in her room.

Any advice?

Wounds inflicted by cats are often fatal, even if apparently minor. Ideally you'd take the bird to a wildlife rescue. Where are you?

GerundTheBehemoth · 30/04/2024 08:09

It's a newly fledged robin. Please take it to a wildlife rescue place as it'll need antibiotics if the cat hurt it (even slightly - their teeth and claws are full of bacteria).

Does it have any obvious injuries? Is it distress? Can it fly / move around OK? Probably one for animal rescue people.

Most vets have access to a fund for treating wildlife. I took a moorhen to our local when it was tangled up in fishing line and couldn't walk. Thankfully the feisty bugger hadn't been like that long and once they'd cut it all off he was free to go.
They may treat the wound and have you release him or recommend a wildlife center.

Cats carry a type of bacteria in their mouths that is fatal to birds. You need to take it to a wildlife centre for antibiotic treatment. If not, it will suffer a horrible, painful death in a few days.

Thanks all, am in North West. Will search online for wildlife centre, if no luck, will ring my vets.

Babies fledge the nest and then spend a few days on the ground being looked after by their parents while they continue to grow. It's a very risky time. We used a to have a Robin which nested in our garden every year and when the time came, we'd have to keep the cats shut inside for a few days.

one question

can it fly?

if not, then….

MAFSAUS · 30/04/2024 08:31

Have found a wildlife rescue not far from me, not answering the phone at the moment so assume they open at 9. Will ring them then and come back to update.

Good luck, OP. A lot of people would have just let it go because it looks fine. But that wouldn't last.

what did they say?

MAFSAUS · 30/04/2024 11:07

Safely delivered to the wildlife rescue, they said he wasn’t obviously injured and was quite “lively” when we got there. They’ll give him antibiotics as he’s come in contact with a cat but should be absolutely fine. Thanks all for your help, they said we’d done the right thing.
