To think 3 or 4 exercise classes a week is enough

I’ve been trying to improve my fitness for a while after not exercising at all during the first half of my 20s. I currently do around 3 classes a week (one weights, one cardio, one Pilates) and feel pretty happy with that.

I’ve noticed that +++ people at my gym do multiple classes per day and are there most days so do around 7-10 per week. For me this seems excessive but maybe I am just lazy?

AIBU to think that 3 classes a week are enough!

What you are doing should be fine to maintain fitness but might not be enough if you were training for a marathon, as others have said it depends on what your goals are and how much free time you have.

I run 3 times a week and usually do a yoga class. I would like to increase this but I have a busy job and a teenager so I have to be realistic and I don’t beat myself up if I don’t achieve this.

I think there are some people who go to the gym and it’s kind of a hobby and part of their personality and social life at the same time and they spend a lot of their free time there. I wouldn’t necessarily judge yourself in comparison to them because you aren’t going to be able to achieve what they can.

I always wonder if it's worth doing one strength class a week.

Common sense tells me it is because it presumably at least maintains current strength levels and helps to stop bone density loss. My view is also it's better doing something rather than nothing, and if you set too high a goal number of visits it's difficult to maintain.

But maybe it's just a waste of time ?

I do an hour every week of strength training and have done for the last four years.

I try to top it up with another 30 mins or so on another day but don't always manage it.

I see an improvement over the last four years - I am definitely doing more than just maintaining. I can lift heavier weights and can plank for longer as well.

Of course I would see more gains if I did more but even an hour a week has had some impact.

I do really push myself in that hour

The NHS guidelines have already been shared above.

Do you do that amount yourself? Just curious as you seem to want to judge OP.

Yes @thepastinsidethepresent - I do that and more. Just answering the OP's question - she started the thread (in AIBU I might add, not in Exercise) to ask whether her 3 exercise sessions per week are enough, and it's nowhere near. If you see judgment in referring to the NHS advice, I guess that's a you problem. 🙂

It’s not clear what you’re asking. Are you being unreasonable having thoughts on other people’s choice to do lots of classes? Yes you are. It’s none of your business. Use your energy elsewhere to think about more important things in the world.
