To pass on shoes to youngest?

I kept all of DS1's shoes, at least before he started growing less so they got a bit worn out before they were too small.

DS2 is walking now, so I got out the old shoes. But then I read a few things saying you should never wear second hand shoes as they're moulded to someone else's feet, and it's really bad for kids especially when starting walking to wear old shoes.

AIBU to pass the shoes on to my youngest or should I just buy new?

I can afford new, it just seems a bit wasteful when most only got worn for a few weeks before being outgrown.

I always did. Never had a problem.

EleanorYoung · 28/04/2024 22:20

We bought new ‘first shoes’ but after that if the shoes were in good enough condition we used them. No issues, 2 teenage boys now

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 28/04/2024 22:21

If in great condition I do pass down wellies, crocs, sandals and the occasional shoe from oldest to youngest.

I don't reuse schools shoes or day to day shoes that have been worn more than sporadically. It is best to buy new because everyone wears shoes differently and they mould to the foot, thus not being as supportive when second hand. Having said that, if needs must, as long as the child is comfortable and not getting blisters then it's probably not too much of an issue to reuse.

SmallIslander · 28/04/2024 22:22

Unless they are totally wrecked we reuse kids shoes. Even if you buy them a new pair, it's nice to have some older ones they can trash playing out.

Irishmama100 · 28/04/2024 22:22

It is a load of rubbish, probably spread by shoe companies. I def would reuse the shoes

Dareisayiseethesunshine · 28/04/2024 22:24

Hell yeah pass them on.... I had 2 dd's a year apart.. Was perfect. And luckily the older one was careful with her things. Dd2 had nowt worth passing on. Total grunge kid that one.

Caswallonthefox · 28/04/2024 22:25

Teeny people yes, because the shoes aren't worn. Older, not so much.

bluetopazlove · 28/04/2024 22:26

Even thirty -odd years ago we were told not to pass on child shoes . How can you have missed this?

Sprogonthetyne · 28/04/2024 22:41

I get new 'all the time' shoe's, but pass on things like wellies, sandles & spares.

PrincessTeaSet · 28/04/2024 22:44

I passed on the first pair as they were hardly worn. Other than that each child has one new pair that they wear mostly (or 1 school shoe and 1 trainers once school age) and we use the hand me downs as spares in case they get wet. Although sometimes (often) they are in terrible condition and just get binned.

Jojobees · 28/04/2024 22:46

Wellies and croc type shoes are passed on, everyday shoes and trainers not.

UneTasse · 28/04/2024 22:47

Sadly I have one child with narrow and one child with wide feet and a very high instep, so it didn’t work for school shoes, but anything that could be passed on, was. Wellies, some trainers, winter boots etc.

This is what I can't work out, there doesn't really seem to be any kind of reputable evidence behind it, and yet it's oft repeated!

The old shoes could be spared for when the main shoes are soaked etc. I would never reuse shoes unless they’ve only been worn a few times

It depends how worn they are. When I or you or anyone walks in shoes we will all put most/least of our weight on slightly different parts of our feet. As we do this the parts of our shoes that get the most weight will wear fastest. This could be obvious (I have a muscular/skeletal/neurological disability and it's VERY obvious), or it could be quite slight. However put a slightly different foot in there and they might need the most support wear it was most worn down. I think it's fine if they have been worn a small number of times for short periods though.
