To think road signs warning of a speed limit change ahead would be useful?

There’s a road I use fairly regularly where the speed limit drops from NSL to 30 at the bottom of a fairly long hill, and then literally a few metres after that there is a speed camera. There have been so many accidents where people who aren’t familiar with the road don’t know the limit change is ahead, don’t slow down in time, clock the camera and slam their brakes on.

AIBU to think a simple sign, maybe speed limit change ahead or 40/30/20 ahead would give people time to begin slowing down sensibly? Or do local councils just want the revenue from the fines?

How visible are the signs saying "30" from the National speed limit road? E.g can you see them from halfway down the hill and begin to slow down?

Blanketpolicy · 28/04/2024 21:07

Need to see the road to comment, can you share on google maps if not too outing?

Allfur · 28/04/2024 21:08

I thought modern cars did that

Sk8erboi · 28/04/2024 21:09

It would be reasonable for limit changing signs but it sounds like a money trap with the camera where it is.
A road by me where it goes from NSL to a 30 has signs on the lead up with 3 lines and a 30 sign, 2 lines, 1 line just like the line signs telling you a turn off on the motorway is coming up.
Sounds like you could do with them there.

Nope. The road is tree lined, you go down the hill, it flattens and there’s a very slight bend then bam- 30. And bam again- camera. So people who know the road begin to slow down part way down the hill (and people who don’t get right up your arse as if you’re halving your speed for the fuck of it) but people who don’t either have to brake very heavily or they get caught by the camera. It’s a busy route to the coast so there are always lots of accidents in summer when tourists start rear-ending each other on their way to the seaside.

Speed signs when the limit changes are bigger than repeaters. Giving you plenty of time to slow down.

You should be doing the limit as you get to the sign (unless your eyesight is crap)

The second you pass a limit serves you right if you're caught.

The signs are there for a reason, are definitely not just stuck there to catch people out, and you can always request that the signs are installed earlier on the road.

And as an example. The northbound road into Odiham in Hampshire has signs warning of a speed reduction ahead. Also some areas have painted roads to warn of speed reductions.

Don't complain if you're not willing to raise it with your council.

No
Just can’t stand the overload on street furniture!

LetsGoRoundTheRoundabout · 28/04/2024 23:31

We have the three countdown signs on entry to the village, which I assume is because the school is about 20 yards in to the 30 zone, so people really do need to get down to 30 by the time they reach the sign. It’s the only place I’ve seen them.

musicalfrog · 28/04/2024 23:32

Agree with @Kandalama there is too much clogging up our vision as it is. 60 is a limit not a target and I wouldn't feel comfortable going that speed down a hill especially on a road lined with trees.

There may be a case for a 40mph zone before the 30 but no, you should be aware as a driver of changes coming up ahead.

AnxiousRabbit · 28/04/2024 23:38

It's a limit not a target.
Without knowing the road I would still suggest going downhill at 60 is far to fast. If you can't safely reduced speed before the camera you weregoing too fast....heaven forbid you had to stop completely for any reason

orchiddottyback · 28/04/2024 23:39

@AngeloMysterioso are you talking about the A642 Wakfield road by any chance with 20+ Speed cameras within an 8 mile stretch with alternating speeds and trees.

Yes its a money making piss take.

Tagyoureit · 28/04/2024 23:57

Some cameras are just a pure cash earner!!

I was on a dual carriageway doing 40, then a very small sign said 30 on a lamp post and before the next lamp post, there's a camera that got me doing 34!!!

Proper signage should be available!!

And proper signage should also be bloody maintained especially on rural, one way roads, not be allowed to be completely covered by foliage and just have some angry, know it locals telling us out of towners, that we're driving the wrong way... just saying... on behalf of a friend, of course... 😳

Catsmere · 29/04/2024 06:15

We have such signs on some roads in Australia - I certainly appreciate them.

VestibuleVirgin · 29/04/2024 06:22

Try and drive with due care and attention. We don't need any more street furniture along our roads, we need the pricks that drive like pricks to stop being pricks and drive safely.
But in the absence of a culture change, start a petition

The lamp post is your sign. Any area with 3 or more lamp posts less than 200 yards apart is a 30 miles per hour zone unless signs say otherwise.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 29/04/2024 06:25

There's an area I regularly go through that has a warning sign, down a hill, lots of trees, virtually everyone ignores it and still slams on the breaks last minute. I always slow well before and 90% of people will blow right past me and anyone behind me overtakes if they can. I'm not sure a warning sign would achieve much. There's another local change with no warning sign on a hill round a corner. The cops like to sit at the bottom of that one. I don't know why one hill has a warning sign and the other doesn't but I don't notice drivers behaving differently at the location with the warning sign.

CasperGutman · 29/04/2024 06:32

Yes, such signs exist. The issue of visual clutter is one consideration, but it certainly sounds like some advance warning could help here. Judicious use of road paint at the speed limit transition can also make it harder to miss. Ideally though, the start of the 30 zone would have been positioned before the bend, or far enough after that drivers had time to see it and adjust speed.

My eyesight must be crap because I can’t see round corners

Speed camera I pass daily is round a bend and has the speed limit painted on the road. Doesn’t even have signs on the side of the road until after the camera. It goes from 30 to 20

Was once driving in Islington, being followed by irate police men in a police car (no sirens or flashing lights) I was doing 20mph and in my rear view mirror i could see they were gesticulating for me to go faster as it was so painfully slow

But my cruise control was set at exactly 20mph

Bunnyasmyname · 25/05/2024 10:22

Pay attention OP. As has been said 60 isnt a target!

Also, local councils don't get the money from speed cameras.

LlynTegid · 25/05/2024 10:29

Seems like many of the 25% of people unfit to have a driving licence especially with poor eyesight are using the road concerned.

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 10:31

I suppose a few fines or a suspension of your licence will be enough to make you realise you don't have to speed.

If the road at the bottom of the hill is urban enough to be a 30, you shouldn't be driving at 60 on the stretch of road before it. Especially not coming down a hill.
