Do you sit by the bath when your dc has a bath or am I lazy?

Dd, 5, having a bath, playing with her toys etc. I’m lay on the bed. It’s an en-suite bedroom and door is wide awake and I can see and hear her completely.
Is this lazy though?
After she’s played a bit, I’ll wash her hair, get her out, pjs, do her hair etc, but do you do more? Do you sit by the bath and play, am I being rubbish?

At age 5, I think it sat by the bath still. And then progressed to doing jobs that were nearby etc

Youngest is 10 now, so obviously I don’t go into the room with him

KeyboardWhinger · 28/04/2024 20:39

It’s my washing folding time, also when I shower and brush my teeth sometimes.

Ankylo · 28/04/2024 20:44

I do, but I have a 2 year old. I doubt I will be sitting by the bath when he's 5!

Candleabra · 28/04/2024 20:48

I sat with my kids until they were much older than 5. I was afraid of them drowning. A drowning child wouldn’t cry out, you’d only know if it was too late.
Lying down on the bed increases the risk of you falling asleep. I really wouldn’t leave a child unattended in the circumstances you’ve described.

I’m amazed at the number of people who leave a 5 year old alone in the bath! Also, how sad that they cant be bothered with their child.

Can’t be bothered? WTF?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 28/04/2024 20:55

It's great that your child is able to play independently. As long as you are able to see/hear her there's no need to be in the room .

I used to put my DDs in the bath and cook the dinner 😂 the bathroom was next door to the kitchen and the doors were open. They’d happily stay in there playing for hours … was great. I’d enjoy it OP!

Yes! My bathroom is next to my kitchen and I did this too .

Trainstrike · 28/04/2024 21:02

I'm fascinated by all the parents who fear almost instantly falling asleep when on a bed, or are your children bathing for hours at a time!

My two are close in age, and have always bathed together, so I've been outside the room when the youngest was about 4/5. They're constantly screaming and singing. If we had an ensuite I'd have no issues with leaving a 5 year old whilst watching from an adjoining room.

Thing is a child (or adult) can drown is a few inches of water in a minute - leave the room or stop paying attention (such as sorting laundry in an adjoining room), child messes about or slips and lands face down = near drowning with permanent severe brain damage or dead. All of that could happen without any noise or cry in 60 seconds.
5 is definitely too young to be alone in the bath. A sensible 7 year old at the youngest.

For anyone saying - 'oh what about adults should they not bathe alone either' - well medical advice if you have epilepsy is not to use the bath if no one else is in the house, and there have been accidental drownings in hospitals when people with disabilities have been left alone, plus an getting into a too hot bath drunk and scalding yourself is a risk.

Mine are still using a baby bath (3 and 5) and it would be impossible for them to fall in and drown due to the size and shape of the bath and the size of them. Definitely recommend the Mamas and papas baby bath for this, also saves a fortune in water.

A 5 year old in a baby bath??

Sunshineclouds11 · 28/04/2024 21:17

My DS is 5 and I still sit in with him.

I personally enjoy bath time tbh, we chat away and have a laugh.

Iwouldntgotothatconcertforfree · 28/04/2024 21:30

No chance of me falling asleep, I’m usually on my phone, door is wide open, i’m facing the bath and Dd is constantly splashing around, never stops talking/singing 😂to be sat right next to her I’d likely get in the way
I just wondered what others did and if I should be participating more in her bath time
Previous poster saying that parents can’t be bothered…we’ve been up since 6.30..made pancakes together, played on the trampoline, been for a dog walk and bike ride, to the shops for art supplies, made bracelets and painted rocks. Then I made dinner, washed up, she played with her dad and watched some tv, whilst I was getting the bath ready…then bathed and stories and lay with her until asleep..is that me being not bothered…?!

Once mine were 5ish I lay on the bed next door with the door ajar. From about 7 they bathed alone.

CrispieCake · 28/04/2024 22:01

My older DC is incapable of being quiet so from around age 5 I'd fold laundry outside the bathroom and do jobs upstairs and listen to the constant stream of nonsense. If the babbling stopped, even for a few seconds, I'd be in there.

A 5 year old in a baby bath??

Yes - it's big enough to sit in and there's space for some playing water. Not for much longer admittedly but it's fine for now!

OvalLemon · 28/04/2024 22:28

I sit on the closed toilet or floor next to the bath. My DC plays by himself though, I think he actually prefers it this way. I sit and watch but by the end of the day we are both exhausted. I’m a SAHM so sometimes I think we are both at a point by that time of the evening where we want to do our own thing!

Noseybookworm · 28/04/2024 22:34

I wouldn't leave a 5 year old in the bath alone, even if you're in the next room. You say you can see her the whole time but if you're on your phone it's easy to get distracted and not look up for a while. I think mine were 7 or 8 before I would leave them for short periods, popping in and out while sorting clothes etc. At 5 I would definitely stay in the room chatting and probably having a clean round of the loo and sink while they were playing!

@Trainstrike

well I 'sleep' terribly at night and if I can (have time) during the day, but something like that I'd lie on the bed and almost immediately fall asleep!"

@Iwouldntgotothatconcertforfree personally I need to stay with them, usually sitting on the toilet seat as it's not comfortable enough to nod off! But if you're confident that you won't nod off then it's totally fine.

Xmasbaby11 · 28/04/2024 22:49

We have quite a big bathroom so I always stayed in there and chatted to my dds or read if they were playing. I didn’t leave them alone in the bath at 5, more like 7 or 8. I stayed for safety reasons as I know drowning is quick, but it was nice to be there and there’s a stool I sat on so not on the floor or anything.

I do think it depends on the layout of the house. The next room from our bathroom isn’t near enough to see or hear someone in the bath.

sunshineandshowers40 · 28/04/2024 22:50

With your set up I would!

NoisySnail · 28/04/2024 23:09

Maybe I was over anxious, but at 5 I still worried about them drowning so stayed in the bathroom. But I had worked at a childrens home where a young child did drown in the bath when left - younger than 5. It was horrendous so it made me really scared of young children and baths.

MeadStMary · 28/04/2024 23:25

I'm just confused by all this time dc's are spending in the bath. I still stay in the bathroom with mine at 8 and 6 but that's because they'd never get washed if I left them to it. We've always just got them in, got them washed and got them out, then carry on with the rest of the bedtime routine. They've started having showers sometimes now because it's quicker and easier than baths.

Is this whole "leaving them to play in the bath" happening every night? I couldn't be doing with that, bedtime would take forever.

Caravaggiouch · 28/04/2024 23:29

I sit in the bathroom with my 6 year old, but don’t really play. I wash her hair, talk to her and we usually have some tunes on we sing along to. When she’s playing happily with bath toys I’ll read my book. There’s not really anywhere convenient nearby for me to sit if not in there with her, because of how our bathroom is positioned.
