To have wanted to chat at party?

I went to a party last night and had a great time. It was in a beautiful country setting, great food, great drink, good time all round. It had been hired for the whole weekend with most guests invited for yesterday evening.

The host had hired a band, and from 8pm onwards the music was so loud no one could talk. However, the room with one of the bars was separate, and the house (which was hired out fully for the do) had a lovely terrace. People were mingling between the main room with the band, the room with the second bar, and the beautiful terrace which overlooked the pool and fields.

The host got upset and went round insisting everyone went back into the main room because she’d paid for a band but no one was dancing. I don’t dance ever but did enjoy the songs being played, but it was so, so loud in the main room that everyone would’ve had to sit in silence listening and not mingling.

WIBU to have not wanted to be in the main room? Most people didn’t leave the room until after the first set, and plenty stayed there all night.

YANBU I love live music but if it's too loud in a room that is too small it's bloody awful

Thanks. Honestly I find it a problem at loads of functions and hate it when you go to a party with only one room and the music is so blaring and loud all night that it’s impossible to talk and you either need to sit in a bored silence or find respite in the toilets or smoking area ‘cooling down’. I don’t know why some venues have the music so loud. Fair enough at the end of the night but when it’s the entire time it’s very annoying.

It’s a massive pet hate of mine when i’m out with friends and we want to chat but can’t due to loud music 😬
I know I sound old (and I am…) but unless I’ve paid to see a band or I’m at a concert, I don’t want to have to shout over music.
A group of friends and I went for a meal once and we had just ordered when the music was turned up. We asked several times if they could turn it down but the bar staff said no. We then escalated it to the Manager who also said no, in his opinion, it wasn’t loud. We pointed out that the very few tables of people that were there were sitting kind of staring at each other and no one was talking.
So we upped and left! The Manager chased us down the street and tried to make us pay for the food we had ordered but we totally refused and carried on walking away.
So no, I don’t think you were being unreasonable.
Background music is lovely at a venue. Loud music is a no no.

I was quite taken aback when the host started complaining. It’s lovely he put a band on, but he surely realised people would want to talk. He often has parties and it’s the same at them all - wall to wall entertainment that is too loud.
