To love moving house

Ok, so the title is a bit misleading as I actually loathe packing up my life and loading into a van HOWEVER my husband and I have move 4 times in the last 10 years and we just can't seem to stay put.

I feel like as soon as the shine wears off i'm onto the next idea and straight on Rightmove. It's not just houses, I get it into my head that I want to live in a new location and get obsessed with looking at houses coming up there. I just feel like I haven't found my happy place yet in terms of house or location. My husband is quite laid back and tends to sway towards my idea eventually and we commit.

Is anyone else like this!? Im actually worried I'll never be satisfied.
Of course I feel very privileged to be in the position to own my own home and be able to move out of choice.

We always want to put our stamp on our houses and whilst I dislike the renovation stage I am passionate about transforming a house into a home and get a lot of satisfaction from the before and after.
Perhaps this will change if I have a family of my own one day, who knows.

If my dh wasn’t stubborn we probably would’ve moved every 2 years.

im like you, can’t find the perfect place.

We’re in the process of moving and im already looking for the next house.

the only thing that stops me is the extortionate fees 😅😅

northchesterforest · 26/04/2024 21:48

Glad to hear I'm not alone! 😅

We have moved so many times - and I still look on right move regularly
I’m not entirely sure why I can’t seem to settle anywhere
DH says we should just have got a caravan at the beginning
if rents weren’t so expensive I think it might have suited us better at certain points than selling up and moving

Bitsa · 26/04/2024 21:57

I've lived all over the UK and several places overseas. I tend to move every few years. I don't enjoy the physical part of moving but like experiencing new areas and places of work. I don't have children which makes it easier. I sometimes wonder if I will ever find that one place I'm happy to settle in or if i'll always have wanderlust.

bungletru · 26/04/2024 21:59

I think the main reason I do it is because I don’t like being tied down anywhere, to anything (except my marriage/family thankfully..so far lol)

freedom is a big part of my values so being able to move freely is a huge thing for me. It’s like if my dh suggested we share a car, it would kill me. If I was stuck in a job forever.. nope no thank you.
I need to know I can move and be “free” essentially.

all that and also, I love looking at houses 🤣

TheLongWay · 26/04/2024 22:00

This is my idea of a nightmare! It must cost you an absolute fortune

ReignOfError · 26/04/2024 22:04

Not sure the wanderlust ever fades. I’m pushing 70 and planning my next move, the first for four years (and the 4th in the last decade alone).

RomeoRivers · 26/04/2024 22:04

My DH and I are constantly on Rightmove picking out our ‘potential new house’ 😂 I love moving and organising and putting our stamp on a place, but once that’s done I’m ready for the next one!

MovingToPlan · 26/04/2024 22:05

I cannot understand this urge at all. 😅 We're moving after 8 years in this house. I'm proud of the improvements we've made, and am looking forward to making our next house cosy and to our liking, but moving is one of the worst self inflicted experiences ever! I wish I could fast forward the next few months and just be settled into our new home (which I will be living in for the rest of my days).

Churchview · 26/04/2024 22:06

We've moved 14 times . We wanted to retire early so have bought do-er uppers (absolute dumps when we got our hands on them) and renovated them for profit. We've always lived in the mess and done the vast majority of work ourselves. It's been fun.

Finally had enough to retire a year ago and sold the last project to downsize massively.

I've liked the process and living in lots of different places. The houses we did up became increasingly big with more bathrooms and space than we knew what to do with. We're now settled in a little two up, two down cottage with a postage stamp garden, which is just down the road from one of the first houses we did up. Never been happier or more glad to be settled. I hope to stay here forever.

I love moving. My parents were the same. I have had 28 houses in 44 years. Moving again in 5 weeks!!

northchesterforest · 26/04/2024 22:11

That's lovely to hear honestly well done!

I hate moving, I need to put down roots. 20 years so far in this house and will only move if I have to.

I'm 53 and have lived in 5 houses in my whole life

My husband and I still live in the house we bought 24 years ago whether we married, no plans to move. I just can't imagine this! The work, the stress, the packing. The money. Why? I know, we are all different, that's why!

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/04/2024 22:15

Plus I hate travelling, maybe 2 sides of the same coin?

Latenightreader · 26/04/2024 22:20

I’m a fortnight into a new house and still surrounded by boxes - doesn’t help that I’ve had to drastically downsize so finding space for everything is hard! The house is nice, and it will be good when I’m sorted, but I loved my last house and I’m not there yet with this. However sale of my house was a nightmare, cost lots and took over eight months so I never want to move again…

Maryamlouise · 26/04/2024 22:21

I moved loads for years and then DP and I purchased "our forever home" and had kids but now about to move. This time took me about 10 years to get fed up of the house and hope to be in the next one same amount of time (and kids through school) and then I think I will want to move again. Love checking out houses on rightmove and love the planning and renovation ideas etc

RaininSummer · 26/04/2024 22:25

I dont get this at all unless I was absolutely loaded and somebody else did all the donkey work. Have been in my house about 34 years and dreading the inevitable move within the next 10 years as not suitable when old.
