Second Hand Moses Basket

FTM due in June, I picked up a secondhand Moses basket today from Facebook marketplace, it all looked fine when I collected etc & it was a bargain.

I've just asked DH to get it out of the car and he's horrified at the thought of a secondhand basket! He said if I'd mentioned he would have saved me the trip as the basket could have sick and all sorts in the weave & you'd never know! He's been happy with other bits I've managed to get secondhand so I don't think it's a snobbery thing, but AIBU or is he?!

He said it's the one thing he's be happy to buy brand new and doesn't want our baby to sleep in it, even with a new mattress & sheets! Shall I just regift it or chuck it?!

That's mad

Merrow · 26/04/2024 17:47

I mean, it will be fine with a new mattress, but I certainly had a few moments of being precious about things with DS1. If it means that much to him regift it (no reason to chuck!)

TonTonMacoute · 26/04/2024 17:49

We had one second hand, it was fine. Little babies only sleep in it for 2 or 3 months, there's hardly time for it to get really manky.

If it looks clean and nice it will be fine, but if not pass it on to someone who will use it.

I should probably add it's just a spare one for downstairs and we have a next to me crib for our bedroom so it would just be for daytime naps Hmm

If it’s SIDS that’s bothering him, perfectly safe if it’s a new mattress, they’re hardly in a Moses basket for five minutes anyway. If it’s just he’s got the ick, what can you do, but don’t bin it, someone will take it.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 26/04/2024 17:53

It will be absolutely fine, but if it's really bothering him it's not a hill I would die on. It's forgivable to be a bit irrational when it comes to your baby's safety.

PopsicleMoon83 · 26/04/2024 17:56

Yes I understand where he's coming from I just honestly didn't think he'd have such a visceral reaction Grin ordinarily I would have mentioned it but he's been flat out at work today and so have I so I didn't even have time to, I'll have another word but it may be a regift job!

Bless him. I was far more precious with my first too. As long as you have a new mattress it should be fine but I know where he's coming from. If he needs telling, it doesn't matter much anyway. They don't sleep in them regardless

456bex · 26/04/2024 20:27

I had a second hand one and just bought a new mattress.

Deliaskis · 26/04/2024 20:29

New mattress and it's fine. They're in it for such a short time any sick or other fluids that might seem a bit gross are really tiny amounts at that stage and sort of run down their neck and at the most into the sheet on the mattress, but not all over everywhere. Sorry if that's TMI, but like... They're just tiny!

MargaretThursday · 26/04/2024 20:30

Ours was about 10th hand. I did buy a new mattress.

nimski · 26/04/2024 20:31

He's being ridiculous.

missmollygreen · 26/04/2024 20:34

Tell him that everything will be covered in vomit and crap soon anyway, so it really doesnt matter

Lancrelady80 · 26/04/2024 20:41

If you do get rid, try to find somewhere like the Baby Basics charity. They'll make sure it goes to somewhere it is needed, such as women fleeing domestic violence, along with other baby essentials.

If he is really that concerned, could it be put in the shower and rinsed over with very hot water. Then left to dry for a long time.
