To ask if weekend only work exists?

lionlass · 26/04/2024 06:59

Dh works long hours mon-fri and we have a baby and no childcare. We're struggling to make ends meet so I need to get a job.

I was hoping I could work 16 hours over the weekends but I'm struggling to find anything on the online job sites.

Does weekend only work exist and if so where would one look to find it?

I'm qualified for nothing so I was thinking something like working in a supermarket checkout or as an order picker etc.

OP posts:

I'm sure it does, OP, especially in grocery stores, supermarkets and hospitality. I would contact your local chains directly or applying to open positions that do not necessarily match your exect requirements and then specify the hours you're looking for. Instead of only applying to jobs that match your requirements in the descriptions. Many employers state their ideal wishes in the job description, but are happy to accommodate an applicant of necessary.

Garden centres are hitting their busiest times. Pop in, drop off a CV.

Thisislifefornow · 26/04/2024 07:29

Local garden centres often want weekend staff

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/04/2024 07:29

Could you become a vicar?
They only have to do Sunday mornings, and then cycle about nodding and smiling to people when it suits them.

(I'm basing this is the TV documentary 'Midsummer Murders')

Garden centres

done manufacturing factories etc offer weekend shifts. My dm works over a week in a kind of social care setting but for a charity organisation. She works 24 hours Saturday morning through to Sunday morning (gets paid to sleep too!) and then 15 hours Sunday night through to Monday morning. So 39 hours over the weekend and then had the week off. 🙌

Confrontayshunme · 26/04/2024 07:33

I have a friend who has worked weekends at B&Q then Pets at Home for about 10 years. Lots of charity shops also have weekend only signs up.

Catza · 26/04/2024 07:34

Probably best to do it old fashioned way and go knocking on doors with a CV. Try reception jobs in hairdressers. They are crying out for weekend staff because almost nobody wants to work those shifts. Look for salons which are open 7/7 rather smaller ones which close on Sun and Mon.

DeeBeeCee · 26/04/2024 09:17

I used to work weekends in a library. See if they are advertising for casual staff.

DeeBeeCee · 26/04/2024 09:19

The other one I did was Market Research Telephone interviewing. I think it’s mostly online now but some jobs still seem to exist.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/04/2024 09:20

Estate agents often employ Saturday only staff to take people to viewings and supervise open houses.

Retail often employ people on two days a week contracts. Remember you may get fewer hours on Sunday because of Sunday trading restrictions.

cadburyegg · 26/04/2024 09:22

Yes retail. I worked weekends at pets at home as a teenager.

drspouse · 26/04/2024 09:23

When you say you have no childcare I'm assuming you mean you have no free childcare.
You won't get to spend any time as a family if you are just working weekends. But a day or two in the week (and find a nice childminder) plus one weekend day will give you a lot more options and time together.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/04/2024 09:24

McDonald’s is very flexible.

Haydenn · 26/04/2024 09:24

Lots in shops and supermarkets. I’ve always picked up extra work like this over the years when I’ve needed it. I usually take a few days walking round the local high street asking and checking the local social media pages

aridiculousargument · 26/04/2024 09:25

Agencies will have weekend only work. Zero hours type.
hospitality, care, cleaning, retail, will have these. You can be specific about your availability so, if you can also work weekday evenings.

AmberOtter · 26/04/2024 09:25

I have just left a weekend job in a nursing home as a waitress. Shifts were sat and sun 8-2pm then 16.30-19.30. Used to bring in £800ish a month. But like previous poster said there was no family time!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 26/04/2024 09:26

Gave a look at some of the zero hours catering companies. Usually very flexible and the hospitality industry is struggling so you’d get plenty of shifts

DejaMooo · 26/04/2024 09:27

I work for the police and they're always crying out for people to work in the contact centre, especially unsociable hours, so night shifts and weekends.

Also, some services that are open over the weekends like insurance companies and banks sometimes advertise for Sat/Sun staff for their call centres.

romany4 · 26/04/2024 09:27

I used to work weekends in Travelodge when my kids were small

BobbyBiscuits · 26/04/2024 09:29

Could you work from home? You could do shifts conducting surveys, or in a customer service role? There must be plenty of places where the majority of their work happens on weekends? If you were able to throw a couple of evenings into the mix it might widen your prospects, but otherwise most jobs might not advertise as specifically weekends only but you could still get shifts for those days.

JaceLancs · 26/04/2024 09:31

Care work and cafe/restaurant etc if you want day time
My local supermarket also has weekend only jobs
DS used to work for M n S simply food at a motorway service station when he was a student - 6am till 2pm both Saturday and Sunday - it was really well paid!

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/04/2024 09:38

Utility companies operate 24/7 (more so on the emergency side) so might be worth trying one of those for customer service work.
Warehouse work is another. However it's physical work.
Do you drive? If so you could deliver parcels.

JellyCakeswim · 26/04/2024 12:17

Can you look at ways to upskill yourself rather for example swim teacher earns more than min. Wage so you can work less hours and private lessons on Sat/Sun are in demand. Massage therapy course and oftern self employed evenings and weekends. I appreciate you need something now but also think about the future and how to upskill. I self funded myself through university by working Sainsburys twilight shift shelf stacking 5-11pm and oftern until 2am. It was pretty much all women with young children at home. I applied off the cuff nothing was advertised as they had a constant stream of applications.

alltoomuchrightnow · 26/04/2024 12:39

I work at IKEA, know quite a few who do weekends only but I think it has to be min 16 hours
