To squirt this cat with a hose

Moonpie6 · 25/04/2024 17:39

Just need some thoughts because my partner didn't let me do it.

I have a cat who is an indoor cat that goes into our back garden as she pleases. Mostly now I'm indoors not too far away. We've built up over 3 years for her to be left alone in the garden.

She's been neutered.

We have a male cat that is an outdoor cat that lives on our street. He's a bully and attacks the other cats in our road frequently which makes me think he's not been neutered.

Earlier I happened to be changing my cats litter tray and looked out the backdoor window. There's the bully cat sat at our backdoor as if waiting to be let in. He then went all over the garden speying with my girl sits. He left so then I went outside to hose everywhere down.

While he was there I told my partner that I was going to chase him away and he stopped me doing so saying it was cruel.

But now truth be told if he came back I want to squirt him with the hose. Normally I would never dream of this as not a cruel person but I don't want him attacking my cat.

She saw him earlier and followed him throughout downstairs through the windows. Fur on end, ears back, tail low. She was anxious.

My partner said she was fine and I'm being silly saying she was scared.

Am I cruel to squirt him with the hose? He honestly is aggressive with other cats.

Do it!

Livelaughllama · 25/04/2024 22:21

I have two cats who I adore. But I wouldn't mind at all if a neighbour sprayed them with a hose to get them out their garden. Although my boy would probably come back for a regular shower because he's a total wally.

Justleaveitblankthen · 25/04/2024 22:36

I wouldn't use a hose.
Don't you have any spray bottles?
The type for watering plants?

Fizzadora · 25/04/2024 22:41

Next door neighbour chucked a whole bucket of water over our cat when it kept climbing on his aviary. Cat never went next door again.
Stop thinking about it, stop talking to your useless DH about it and just do it.

Everythinggreen · 25/04/2024 22:50

He's not a black cat is he? It sounds as though you could be describing a cat on my street who I absolutely love but is a scraper and his owners say exactly what you've said 😂 I've walked him home injured once, and my DP was gobsmacked that i knocked on their door to tell them, likenhe was a kid 🤣

one of the reasons I don't let my lot out is due to a few unneutered Toms nearby who love a fight.

Catsmere · 25/04/2024 22:54

DH sounds like he doesn't know much about cats if he doesn't recognise when your girl is scared, or he thinks it's cruel to shoo the male out of your garden. Will he be happy to cough up for vet bills once that cat attacks her? One of my girls had half her tail amputated because of a bite that went into the bone.

Oh why what does black pepper do?

I was told to do it by some neighbours who'd had the same problem, the cats didn't seem to like sniffing about the ground black pepper, it put them right off spraying my patio. I then found out later that other friends had used the same thing.
They never got close enough to eat any once they could smell it.

Don't tempt me. I would if he hurt my cat. She's my baby, I don't have any children. Soft as that sounds.

Well no, it’s a cat. It isn’t your baby. It’s just a pet.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 26/04/2024 07:38

Cats are territorial. It is natural for them to chase and be chased off territory.

Use the hose and a water pistol every time you see him to let him know this us not his territory.

Not cruel. Biting his ear off, as another cat might do, is worse.

Thanks for the tip I will do this. It might put my girl off wanting to sit in the mud/spoil.

Sounds like a good match for my girl - shall we double date.

We love our 4 cats. Squirt away. A washing up bottle filled with water works well. Rinse and repeat, every time. He’ll get the message and stay distant.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 26/04/2024 09:13

@WendySmith2508 Imagine if someone did that to you lol

I love animals but I would 100% squirt the cat with the hose if it was spraying my home.
As soon as the cat gets wet it’s going to run anyway! Plus it’s summer so.

Exactly. Don't worry he's back on earlies tomorrow up at 4am so goes to bed super early.

So im going out today to buy a water pistol and then I will be on standby.

And its me that pays everything for my cat but believe me if anything happened he would be coughing up. Hopefully not though.

I don't think he has any practical concept of being responsible for something other than yourself. He has got better like.

But he's just like play play play. Whereas I'm the one does the feeding, vets etc. She still comes to me for all cuddles and everything though - only him when I'm not free or she's demanding treats because she knows he's a soft touch.

We had the same issue with a horrible cat. I found getting a dog stopped it coming back! Haven’t had issues with it for ages now

Applescruffle · 26/04/2024 09:16

It's your territory, not his and another cat would let him know that in a much worse way than with a bit of water.

Spray him every time you see him in your garden until he gets the message

Oh blimey, a manchild to deal with as well!

Maybe he needs a squirt with the hose as well. ;)

Duckingella · 26/04/2024 09:37

Use to have the same issue only this thing was aggressive;it caused multiple vet trips for myself and 2 neighbours with cats so we all soaked the bugger;funnily enough he stopped coming around and no I didn't consider it cruel given the nasty injuries it gave my cat.

Love this - think I will squirt him.

Not in a parent way its like banter we have so it's in a jokey way, but when he's annoyed me I hide his PlayStation controller. Only til he notices its gone and asks where it is.

That sounds awful writing that but it is only playing about, like I leave him a cream egg in his sock draw or like an I love you note in the book he's reading.

I will see how I get on first because I don't really have the time to walk dogs or inclination at this time.

Weird I used to be a dog person until I got my cat and now I'm a crazy cat lady x

Squirting them with water is fine, my neighbour does it to my cat if she winds up his dogs. It doesn't harm her at all.

😆

Yes honestly I've hid it in the cereal box before now.

He works very unsocial hours so this time when he had been on nights I needed stuff done at home, I was in the office so I wouldn't be able to remind him.

I knew he would get up and do this video space game on the PlayStation instead so I hid the controller in the branflakes box. I eat them he doesn't. He still didn't do my thing though he just went the gym.

Water gun is a brill idea so I can zap him when he's getting on my nerves.

Another time he was lounging in bed (he'd been on nights) so to annoy him I went in our bedroom and took the duvet cover downstairs with me then went back for the pillows!
