to remind people of the word "singly"

Where did it go? Why has "singularly" taken over? I don't understand. One is single. Unusual is singular. Loaves of bread sold one at a time are sold singly. One unusual frock could be described as a singular frock and sold singly. I'm sad for singly, it's dying a death.

I've taken note of posters who've said they've never seen the singularly issue and, having little else to do, googled "sold singularly" (just those two words) to see if I've overstated the case. I haven't.

Strange, because I just did the same and in the first two pages there was only one example. An Australian window company.
All the other hits were automatic translation sites (giving the "sold singularly" translation incorrectly obviously)

How odd!

Just tried, and found the same - googling ‘sold singularly’ doesn’t get a single hit indicating it’s in common use in the UK. It’s all translation sites and the odd Amazon.com result

I hadn't noticed 'singly' falling into disuse. I think I do use it though I'm not quite sure when.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 25/04/2024 23:47

Singly is a great word.

Frock however should be banished forever.

Whenever my MIL says "That's a lovely frock you're wearing", I instantly want to rip it off and burn it 😬😂

You may be feeling pressured at work, but unless someone has put you in a sealed tank & added gas, I suspect you are unlikely to be feeling pressurised.

You were not burglarized, you were burgled.

I can't currently recall the others that annoy me whenever I read them, which is probably for the best...

Singly is a lovely word.

The thing that worries me is all these deceptive houses listed on the property sites. It's an epidemic of deceit.

Interesting about the pronunciation. I like saying it. Maybe it's easier in a northern accent?
