To not migrate over to UC

I've had my migration notice. There are a few reasons why I think Fxxx this shit I won't bother.
First is I have over the 16k in savings so would only get a year before I don't qualify.
Next is one of my DC is leaving education this year.
Finally, I'm going to be increasing my hours hopefully in the next few months so I'll probably get hardly anything.

For the above reasons I really can't be arsed applying and being scrutinised but I'm getting about 3 letters a week telling me to apply still.

Will I still get my child benefit for my youngest without being on UC?

Thanks if you got this far!

Lucky you! Over 16k on savings while on benefits! Good going. As long as you're on less.than £50k you'll still get child benefit, if you don't need the money, why apply?

Hermittrismegistus · 23/04/2024 22:50

Is a year of free extra money really not enough to motivate you to complete some forms?

nebulae · 23/04/2024 22:58

Put your tin hat on OP. You'll have people frothing at the mouth regarding your savings.

We decided not to for similar reasons but mainly that my fixed term contract coincidently ended at the same time we were due to transfer and that change meant we could not transfer to UC with the same benefits (ie higher savings) so basically would be due nothing. To be honest I’m glad, I’ve found more work with extra hours and we no longer have to deal with the blooming forms and annual reviews.

it’s been a life saver while kids were young especially as one is severely disabled but I’m glad to not be in the UC system.

I had a migration notice that my end date was this month. I haven't applied. I only get about £12 a week and we have a pay review next month.

I suspect this is why they didn't transfer people directly over, because a significant amount of people will decide it's not worth the paperwork and inevitable complications.

If you don’t need it then no, don’t bother. How much would you be getting for the next year?

Ohnoicantdeal · 23/04/2024 23:05

Just to be a little clearer, it was working tax credits and child tax credit we were getting. We don't claim any other benefits. Tax credits was used for a bit of extra support for our family while they were young. My 16k+ was inheritance money.

Did you declare the 16k whilst on tax credits?

I'm not really sure because DS1 is leaving college and I'll be getting more work. Probably not much. I would rather work more.

Do I have to do anything to not apply? Did your tax credits just stop or do you have to tell them?

It’s gone up to £60k now

ObliviousCoalmine · 24/04/2024 15:48

@Ohnoicantdeal no I just ignored the migration letter and the payment stopped on the day it said it would. I logged into my online TC account and they'd closed it. I did get a letter telling me that if I applied for UC in the next month then I'd still get the payment protection doodad.

I'm undecided. It feels like it's not worth the intrusive application and monitoring.

Beezknees · 24/04/2024 15:50

You'll still get child benefit, it's paid separately to UC.
