Creeped out someone used my bin?

Ok it sounds dramatic but it’s on my front driveway but you have to walk up and I don’t talk/know my neighbours. Just feels odd a stranger was on my property.

And it was boxes for a lamp that was in the recycling so not someone just walking by.

You're right, that's really dramatic 🤣

NoisySnail · 23/04/2024 10:58

Honestly if this creeps you out consider whether you have an issue with your mental health you are in denial about? Are you over anxious? Is your world too small?
Because this is the kind of thing that would not even register for most people, except to be a bit annoyed they have less space in the bin for their own stuff.

I think that's a bit unfair. It would be different if it was on the road ready for collection, or kept near the road, then it would just be annoying. But someone has thought 'I need a bin for this' looked around, spied her bin and walked onto her property to use it.

I wouldn't be 'creeped out' enough to make a thread about it, but I get it. It's odd behaviour.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 23/04/2024 11:03

Wow. I would also be a bit creeped out knowing someone has come onto my property to use my bins. I don't think this means I have an issue with my mental health. It just means there's an unusual situation with unanswered questions.

Anywherebuthere · 23/04/2024 11:04

It would be polite if they ask to use yours if their own is full but I'd much rather someone uses the bin rather than dumping it on the ground.

(Obviously within reason, dont fill it to the top with your rubbish I need to put mine in too!)

Nothing creepy about it though. Just annoying if it means you have less space for your recycling.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 23/04/2024 11:07

To all those saying the OP is unreasonable and over reacting, we had a neighbour who used to prowl around after dark, putting her stuff in other peoples bin’s. ( she also used to walk into other people’s houses if the door wasn’t locked…)

Nothing to get that upset about, so long as you didn’t leave your door open, of course. Until she tried to murder her lodger.

NoisySnail · 23/04/2024 11:07

I do not think it is at all creepy.

blanketfortden · 23/04/2024 11:23

Most generous interpretation - neighbour being cheeky fucker and sneaking stuff into your bin because theirs is full. They should have asked you or kept the stuff for next time.

It makes sense to me that you are a bit creeped out. Messing with your stuff is a tactic commonly used by bullies/assholes to push boundaries. If this is a one off it's probably nothing, but people suggesting you have mental health problems are gaslighting you.

ginasevern · 23/04/2024 11:24

Bin wars are one of the most contentious modern day issues, along with parking. The fact it was a box for a lamp suggests it is a cheeky neighbour which is bloody annoying but not particularly unsettling. If it had been a bag of used herioin needles, I could understand your reaction. If it escalates and you are really concerned get a cheap camera to cover that area.

buttonchocolate · 23/04/2024 11:28

I just wouldn’t feel comfortable going into someone property who I didn’t know to also use their property.

it’s placed close to the front window so yes to have a stranger far enough onto my property they are standing right in front of my window does creep me out.

It is odd that someone who has bought a lamp or lamps for their home would not put them in their own bin. However has chosen to walk to someone else's house and onto their drive to use their bin.

Does no one else think it a tad strange ?

Mama2many73 · 23/04/2024 11:38

If my bin is out I don't mind neighbours using it as long as they put the 'right' rubbish in.

We once had someone.elses rubbish in the bin when it was in our yard with a 7ft wall and locked gate.

We also had a dead pigeon in a bag put in our bin. Several pigeon crees in nearby allotments, I did report to local council who own the allotments.

MidnightPatrol · 23/04/2024 11:48

I’d not really be bothered, assuming it was in the correct bin (ie would be taken away) and I didn’t need the bin-space myself.

It’s a bit cheeky, but not a huge deal.

It sounds as though the neighbour was on your property… to recycle some cardboard, so I doubt they’re a hardened criminal.

blanketfortden · 23/04/2024 15:18

If it's outside your front window, there is the small possibility that they put the stuff in your bin to have an excuse to come and snoop near your window.

I once had a creepy neighbour that put his bins right next the boundary, despite having loads of space elsewhere. He used to be putting his rubbish out every day/ multiple times daily and it was clearly an excuse to peer into my front window!

I might be tempted to move the bins or get a security light that is motion activated to cover that area.

Not just an attempt to get ugly plastic bins as far away from the rest of his garden as possible?

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 23/04/2024 15:48

Jesus Christ Hmm

Someone put some rubbish in your bin, presumably because their own bin was full.

Trying to swing this as something creepy, or even unusual, is crazy behaviour. I'm struggling to understand why anyone would have any reaction to 'unknown rubbish' in their bin other than mild annoyance if they'd used up space you needed.

Yes it’s creepy and crosses the line for you to enter someone property for the purpose of using their property. You’re just clearly entitled.
