I've just bought some silicone baking trays for making cakes.

DH is looking at them askance and is convinced that they will melt when put in the oven.

He's wrong, isn't he?

It's the plastic that would put me off. They do the job but you'll never get rid of that taste.

Pashazade · 23/04/2024 13:49

Only time I used them they made the cakes taste weird. Never again

I won't be eating this cake, luckily.
I'm donating it to a charity afternoon tea.

I use silicon muffin tins and loaf tins but I also ditched the large round silicon cake tin. I also line my tins (the pre-made lakeland paper liners are great!)

TheShellBeach · 23/04/2024 14:20

Oh well, I won them on an ebay auction.

I'll go back to the tins next time.

I think you should test them first. I love the silicon muffin cases I have - no issues with smell or taste. They work best when sitting in a muffin tin to maintain shape, but that's the same as a paper case

It's too late! The cakes 🎂 are in the oven.

I have a sneaking feeling that the cake tins are too big for the quantity of mixture.

Or possibly that there is insufficient mixture........

We shall see. DH is hovering.

I've sent him out to wash the car.

.......... so if I've buggered up the cakes, I can throw them out without him seeing, and claim that the eggs were off.

Or something.

Did you buy them from a reputable seller? If you bought them off something like Teemoo then you've got no chance

Bugger. I can't even remember.

I found that the texture of the cakes was all slimy and horrible, like it had sweated in the silicone. It was grim and I chucked the moulds after the first use.

This is not encouraging.

I can't help but wonder if in years to come we'll all be told we've been eating microplastics from silicon cooking stuff?

Karatema · 23/04/2024 15:09

I try to use just my silicone "tins" because they are so much easier than the metal ones. Shape is never compromised.

TheShellBeach · 24/04/2024 13:02

Well, the shape was fine, and the cakes were (as expected) a bit flat, but with icing they're okay.

Silicone stuff is fine, they keep the "smell" of lemon dishwasher tablets, but if you use non-lemon ones they are absolutely fine.

We haven't got a dishwasher.

Hi Shell.
Please tell your DH that I use silicon egg rounds for frying eggs. They don't melt, even on a griddle, they clean very easily, either in the dishwasher or being washed by hand, and I've never noticed any lingering detergent smell.
They also make great round fried eggs.

They have revolutionised cooked breakfasts in our house 🤣🤣🤣

Ooh!
Mr SB is, in fact, the breakfast chef in this house (and I cook dinner) so this information will be of great interest to him, Grumpy.

They won’t melt but they’ll taste weird. I won’t bake in silicone for that reason.
